Chapter Twenty-Three

Luna's POV

Luna grumbled angrily and tossed the stack of papers across the desk. She took a breath and let her head drop into her hands. Her job was killing her. She had to work at home since the office was closed for renovation. She just wanted a break. She wanted to literally run away with Amber. They could go on a vacation like they did for Amber's birthday. That was absolute paradise.

Amber was currently out with Lucy and Asher, leaving Luna to her stack of work. She wasn't alone, though. She never was alone. The place was packed with people who hated her still, including Amber's parents, Joel, and Samuel. Well maybe Samuel didn't hate her. But she hated him.

She wanted to live with only Amber again. Eva wasn't a bother, and neither was Asher. Everyone else caused drama and pissed Luna off. Hailey was constantly lurking around, giving Luna a headache. She needed to tell her off - maybe remind her that Amber was never going to come back to her.

Luna heard Oliver barking from outside. She stood from her chair and peeked out her glass window. Looking down from the third floor, she had an overhead view of Eva sitting in the grass as Oliver darted around her.

Luna planned to suggest a vacation when Amber got back. It was much needed for the both of them. With their house burning down and Alice right on their backs, the stress level was outrageous.

It seemed that Oliver was barking at something in particular now. Eva didn't notice, for she was too buried in whatever book she was reading.

Eva always had an angelic look to her. Luna smiled as she remembered when Eva was the only one who had the heart to move in with her.

That smile faded when her phone went off, and she answered to one of her coworkers. The lady had a question about the new case, which Luna had already explained to her before.

It took eternity to get off the phone, and Luna was more irritated than she was before.

Work, work, work. Stress, stress, stress. That's all her life was anymore.

She headed to the bathroom connected to the room. She ran a brush through her long hair, combing out all the tangles.

She planned on taking a shower when there was a knock on the door, and immediately after, Eva's small voice.

"Some... Someone is here to see you."

Luna darted to the door and opened it to see the wide-eyed girl in front of her.

"It sounds serious," Eva whispered.

"Who is it?" Luna whispered back. If you didn't whisper in this damn house, your words would echo off the walls for everyone to hear.

Eva swayed on her bare feet. "I don't know. Just go!"

Luna was concerned. Had something happened? What had Alice done this time? Luna would kill her...

Luna slowly descended the stairs. Eva had left the doors open, and once Luna was able to see outside of them, her heart stopped.

It was the officials. There stood a group of men dressed in the same outfit. Everyone knew by the looks of that outfit that they were from the kingdom. They were messengers.

But what had they come for? Had someone broken a rule?

Luna straightened her posture and cleared her throat before stepping up to the door.

All four of their heads raised, and almost simultaneously, they looked Luna up and down. She tried not to flinch.

"You are Luna Brookewind?" One of them asked, and Luna wondered if he was disappointed.

"Y-yes."

"We have some things to discuss," the same one continued, his nose and chin high in the air. "May we come in?"

Luna didn't think that was really a question.

"Of course," she said as she stepped to the side.

He nodded his head in appreciation and Luna shut the doors behind them once they had all entered. She carefully led them into the living room, where the four of them l sat on the large couch while Luna sat across from them on the love seat.

The same official cleared his throat. "Miss Brookewind, we come here on behalf of the kingdom. We haven't yet released what has happened, so I assume you are unaware."

Luna was unaware. She blinked at him and vaguely wondered why the other three came if only one was going to speak.

"It's quite odd, Miss Brookewind, but the entire Bathel family has died."

Luna could barley breathe. She was too hopeful for what was coming next to really care about the dead family. Her fingers were entangled nervously and she sat on the edge of the love seat.

"We are devastated by the loss, but we need to keep our kingdom upright." He took a breath and closed his eyes for a split second. "Since the whole family is gone, you are the next in line to be the rightful queen."

Luna inhaled a gulp of air which almost made her choke. She was to be queen. They were royalty again. This changed everything.

"Do you accept, Miss Brookewind?"

"Of... Of course, Sir. Thank you... so much." She wondered if he could hear the shaking of her voice or see how excited she was.

She thought she saw him smile. "We will send an official letter and hold the ceremony on a specific date soon."

Luna couldn't help but grin. "Sounds wonderful."

The man nodded and the four of them stood.

The whole scene started and ended so quickly, but Luna was estatic.

She couldn't believe it, though. She had to be dreaming. Amber would never believe her! They would never have to worry about financial issues, enemies, jobs, or anything at all! Running the kingdom might be stressful, but it would be worth it! Luna had helped do it before; she could do it again.

Luna led the officials out, and after closing the door behind them, screamed in excitement.

*****************************************************

Are you surprised?

I know it's still short, but it's better than nothing, right? :D Sorry.

And I keep changing Luna's last name because I can't ever remember what I make it. XD I'm sorry for that, too.

Stay tuned and take care.
