Chapter Thirty-Seven

"Hang them above the staircase," Luna ordered.

Amber watched from nearby as several servants struggled to dangle streams of confetti.

Luna shook her head in disappointment. "More to the left."

Sally stood right by Luna, clinging onto her dress with her hand. Most of the people at the home thought it was adorable how clingy she was, but Amber was irritated by it.

"I said to the left!" Luna barked impatiently.

Luna had asked Amber to marry her and as soon as she accepted, Luna decided to throw a ball in celebration of their engagement and of Sally's return.

Her proposal had been a joyous moment and Amber was so excited. However, her fiancé didn't look so happy right now. It had been two days since the romantic night which meant two days of stress for Luna, who was obviously planning the whole party.

Her face was pink with anger and the servants twitched nervously, doing their best to balance on the ladder and please Luna.

"If I have to come up there and do it myself, I-"

"I think the decoration looks great where it is now," Amber chimed in, saving the workers from Luna's wrath.

Luna hesitated and looked to Amber before smiling softly. "Okay. My love likes them there so leave them be."

The servants seemed relieved.

Hailey suddenly rushed up to Amber, appearing flustered. Her cheetah shirt had been shoved on sloppily and she wore tight black jeans even though it was August.

"Amber, I need to speak with you," Hailey gasped.

"O-okay."

Hailey's eyes wandered and Amber followed them to Luna, who was watching them closely from several feet away, her fingers running through Sally's hair.

"Alone," Hailey added firmly.

"Is everything alright?" Amber asked, worried.

Hailey walked away and obviously meant for Amber to follow her. Amber glanced to Luna and shrugged innocently before chasing after Hailey.

She followed her into one of the living rooms and joined her on the white couch. She had always been afraid to sit on this couch since it was white and perfect and expensive.

Hailey ran her hands down her face. "I just heard the news."

"What?"

Hailey finally locked eyes with her. "You and Luna are getting married."

Why was she acting like that was such a bad thing?

"Yes..." Amber replied slowly. "We are."

"I want to be happy for you as a friend but I just can't be. This is horrible news for me," Hailey complained.

Amber felt awkward. What was she supposed to say? She wasn't going to apologize.

"It'll be alright, Hailey," she said after a moment.

But Hailey shook her head. "No. I still want you, Amber."

Amber knew that was no secret. Once again, she didn't know what to say. So she looked to the ground.

"I was hoping you'd change your mind about me. I know I'm so selfish, but I love you," Hailey continued.

Amber remained silent but watched from the corner of her eye as Hailey stared at the ring on Amber's finger.
