Chapter Nineteen
"Amber, please!"
Amber groaned lightly and felt her eyes flicker open and closed. She was stuck in between sleep and reality.
She heard a shriek and knew something was wrong. She could sense it. She just could not wake up.
She was bouncing gently. She was in someone's arms, being carried. A harsh beeping sounded in the distance.
She was burning up. It was so hot...
"Wake up!" A familiar voice demanded.
Amber's eyes at last flung open. She gasped at the sight. Luna was holding her with a worried expression. She was still in her pajamas and sweat clung to her pale face.
Once she looked down at Amber, her eyes flashed red. "Oh, Amber. Are you okay?!"
Amber shifted in her arms, but the woman held her tight. "What's going on?" She mumbled. She wished she could fully wake up. They were in trouble.
She turned her head to face heaps of flames, causing her to jolt fully awake. She inhaled deeply in shock then went into a fit of uncontrolled coughs from all the smoke.
There was fire everywhere! In their house!
"Why is our house on fire?!" Amber cried, beginning to panic. They were surrounded by large and unforgiving flames.
"We gotta get out of here, baby," Luna said too casually. Shadows from all the fire danced on her face, outlining her structures.
Luna hopped across the floor, cradling Amber who clung onto her with tears in her eyes. Oh God... what had happened?
Luna came to a sudden halt and shrieked. Amber looked up in time to watch a small explosion of flames flash right before them.
They were on the stairs, but fire covered every corner. "We're not going to make it," Amber sobbed, allowing the tears to stream down her face.
There was no way. The fire was relentless. Each flame fed off the other, growing larger and larger.
"Don't say that!" Luna shouted over the crackling from the fire.
"Wait, can't you use your powers to put out the fire?"
Luna shook her head, her eyes looking everywhere but at Amber. "No, there's too much... it's too big."
"Wouldn't it be easier if you put me down?" Amber asked, looking up at her girlfriend, who was probably going to have a panic attack soon.
"No!" She yelled too harshly. "I am not letting you go!"
Suddenly, a piece of the ceiling fell from its place, falling close to the two women. They both screamed and Luna pushed Amber's head into her chest, protecting her head with her hand.
Amber was really worried about Luna and wanted to help protect her as well, but knew her girlfriend would not let her. All she could do was stay still in her arms and hope they would both get out okay.
She bounced against the woman's chest as Luna stepped down several stairs. Amber dug her fingers into the woman's shirt, crying against the fabric.
She felt Luna moving and panting, her chest heaving up and down against Amber's face.
After a few moments of Luna carefully hopping around, Amber heard the distant yelp sound. She instantly recognized the sound from a creature and knew it was Oliver.
