Jessica POV:

I don't understand what I am hearing. "What? But Martin's dead! One of the goblins killed him! There was a witness!" Mr. Taws shook his head disappointed. He explains, "No, no, no. He is alive yet! Haven't you noticed that none of the other people who were taken are dead?"

I think about what Mr. Taws said. I realize it's true. Farmer Bernadette and Bobby Sr. are both alive, so that must mean Martin is too! Mr. Taws continues proudly, "Yes. And as for your witness who saw him die...Bradly, would you come out, please?" I'm shocked. I recognize that name immediately. But, there's no way...

Bradly steps out from a curtain next to the thrones. He's dressed in black garb and is looking sadly at the ground. Like he's bowing in shame."Yes," Mr. Taws says, "Bradly has been a very good sheep dog. I gladly promised him the death of his enemy, Martin if he would help me. And if that wasn't enough, I also told him I would slit the throat of his poor, little friend. His name was fish, or something, yes?"

Bradley's eyes start tearing up. He cant6 even look up to face us. He is la broken person. I can't believe any of this. Shigeru screams in English at Bradly, "How could you?" But in truth, I'm sure Shigeru understands why Bradly did what he did. Its what we would have done for Martin. No, its what we did do for Martin.

Mr. Taws says, "Ah yes. What one would do to protect another. It's truly a shame that even Martin's best friends don't know where he is, though. This makes you all useless to me. GUARDS! TAKE THEM AWAY!" About a dozen goblin guards surround us. We are helpless to fight back. We are forced back to our cells by the guards. Within only a minute, we are slammed back into our icy prison.

I feel helpless. Theres nothing I can do. The cold betrayal stings more than the icy floor. I know Shigeru feels it too. Farmer Bernadette and Bobby Sr. impatiently beg us for an update. "How we are." and "What happemed?" and "What's going on?"

Through the pain, I explained to them everything that happened. The betrayal, the reveal, and everything else. Farmer Bernadette doesn't seem relived. After I finish retalling the story, she looks up at the ceiling and cries, "I just wish I knew. I want my Marty back." We all shoot her pitiful looks.

Well, there nothing we can do now. Were all trapped. This is the end. Mr. Taws is going to get rid of us. But wait a minute, why did Mr. Taws even want to know what happened to Martin anyway??" I lean to Farmer Bernadette and say, "Umm, I'm sorry, but you know Martin. Would you have any idea why Mr. Taws would be looking for Martin?"

Bernadette sighs, "Yes. I'm sure you may have figured it out by now. Martin is a witch. Long ago, he had a great grandfather named Jubaya. He was a powerful witch. I dont know much about the history, but when I saw that he was born with blue hair, I figured it all out. I was going to tell him before this all happened. But I ran put of time. This is all my fault. I should have done better."

I try to calm relieve Bernadette by telling her, "Look, when we got attacked by trolls when the town had froze that day, Martin showed some powerful magic. We didn't really understand what it was at the time. But whatever it was, it was strong. Not to mention, Simon doesn't know where he is. I'm sure he's alive and he'll pull though. He always does."

Bernadette smiles, "Yeah," she says, "You're right. He may be very adverage, but he's the most incredible thing that has ever happened to me."

A ribbit distracts me from the heartfelt conversation. I look to the backpack and exclaim, "Oh! I'm sorry Futoi-Chan! You must be hungry and cramped in there!" I take the big, small frog from the backpack when inspiration hits me.

"Hey!" I cheer to everyone, "I think I might know how to escape!"
