Parte 19: Timber [S2]

Shigeru Pov: (English for your convenience)

Chopy chopy chopy chopy.

Cutty cutty cutty cutty.

I sing to myself in Japanese. I know my singing bothers some of the other workers, but I think it makes work go wayyyyy faster.

I've chopped wood with other people before, but あお (Shigeru's name for Martin) and I had something special. I wish he could be with me through this long year other than just in spirit. But its not only Martin who I miss. I miss Japan. I miss my parents. I miss home.

At least I've been able to hang out with Jessica. She's really cool. Other than maybe Bobby, Jessica's my only real friend now.

Choppy choppy choppy choppy.

My axe finally hits the heart of the oak sending the mighty tree toppling over. "TIMBER" someone behind me screams. I look behind me to see Jessica breathing heavily. "Hello Jessica. You done resting?" I say to her.

She leans over to catch her breath. "I have really urgent news! But I couldn't resist a good Timber cry..." I know this to be true. Yelling timber is our favorite things to yell, even though I'm not really sure what it means. She told me to say it whenever a tree falls.

"Look, you know the book Martin left behind?! Well, it has words now!" I'm confused. "あお book?" I ask her. Jessica tries to explain it again in different words. After another explaination I shake my head. Jessica gives up explaining, sighs, and leads my arm back to her cabin. I'm probably going to get yelled at for leaving the tree in the snow, but I don't care.

I follow her all the way to her cabin. Her room is nice. Every family has been able to get their own cabin now. Her parents must be in their rooms sleeping because I don't see them. Jessica leads me to her room and closes the door. She takes put the dusty journal and flips through it.

As plain as day, I can see that each page has an array of words written down. I'm shocked. I wonder if Jessica has been writting in it, but i don't think she would do that. And I know it is probably just me, but the words in the book almost seems to swirl around on the page.

"What the book say?" I ask Jessica. I wish I could read what it says on my own, but speaking English is hard enough, no way I can even try to read any of it. So Jessica says, "Its filled with notes. Letters, from someone. Sent to Martin. Someone, named Jubaya? But at the end there's this."

I understand most of what she is saying. But I don't understand how this is possible. I mean, mysterious notes appearing? She reads me the last bit of the book in a dreamy sort of voice,

"Jessica. Shigeru. Find me."
-Me.

I look over to Jessica. I can't tell what she is thinking. I say to her the best I can, "You understand he could not have write this." Jessica looks out the window and thinks. She taps her finger against the hard leather that covers the window hole. "You know we have to go look for him. I swear didn't write this. You know that. But if there's any chance he's still alive, we need to take it. He would have done the same for us. You know he would." She points out.

I sigh. There's so many thoughts arguing in my head. I know I shouldn't go. But that's not what my heart says. あお, no. Martin, asked us to follow him. To find him. I know that. My mind is clear. Even if I stay here...in this safe place...I'm going to suffer just as much. This is the only thing I have power to do.

"Yes." I say to Jessica. She laughs, "Okay then. Its time for us to go out and do something. Well leave at 9 tonight. When there's only the watchman out. The goblins in the city should be sleeping by then."

"Where will we look?" I ask. "We do not know where he is." Jessica answers, "Well start at the Better Buy store. The goblins would never expect us to go back there again and it will give us a trail to follow."

"Nine tonight?" I verify.

"Nine tonight" She agrees.
