The stars reflected on the ocean, sparkling in the night sky.

The ocean moved so calmly, it seemed to be almost taunting the shocked boy on the beach.

Ranboo knew things like this happened.

But he didn't know they'd happen to Tubbo.

Or at least, he didn't think they would.

Tubbo was gone so quickly. One moment, he was laughing, trying to stay balanced on his paddleboard. Ranboo had looked away for just a moment. Then, Tubbo was gone, and the chat was freaking out.

"Guys, where's Tubbo?" Ranboo asked, jogging down to the waterline, chat open on his phone. "Y'all didn't lose him, did you?" Ranboo had chosen the side of humor. Thinking back, he seemed to be rude. It seemed as if he didn't care about what had happened.

Chat was saying something about Tubbo falling. Maybe it was a riptide, someone donated. After what felt like hours, but was more probably three minutes, it seemed Tubbo had just disappeared.

Ranboo immediately ended stream when he saw a small body wash up to shore.

~~~~~~
Tommy hadn't left Tubbo's room yet. He could just keep pretending that Ranboo and Tubbo would arrive back from the beach stream. He could do it until he died, until his stomach gave up its rumbling with hunger. Until his throat stopped begging for water. But they would come back, wouldn't they? The ending of that stream was just a joke.
Tommy held one of Tubbo's pillows close to his chest for support until they came back. He was lonely. Not even the twinkling night sky could bring him comfort that night.
~~~~~~

Tubbo's body was cold, lifeless. His hoodie was soaked, as were his shorts, socks, and shoes. His hair was a tangled mat. But his chest was the first thing Ranboo had noticed.

Tubbo's chest wasn't rising.

Neither was it falling.

~~~~~~
"Tommy... The funeral is today." Ranboo sat down on Tubbo's bed next to the dazed shell of a boy, once called Tommy.
"Hm.." Tommy nodded. His eyes were bloodshot and swollen, and his eyes were ringed by black circles. He hadn't slept, nor eaten in days. Everyone was worried about him. The only person he'd interact with was Ranboo. And even that was very limited.
"We should go, I think." Ranboo knew they should go. He didn't want to, of course. He knew it \would only break him further. But he also knew he'd beat himself up inside if he didn't get to say goodbye, and people would misunderstand his actions if he didn't go. The last thing he wanted was to push everyone else away because they thought he was an awful friend.
"I- I think we should go." Tommy said quietly after the long pause in conversation, his voice dry and shaky.
Ranboo exhaled heavily, taking Tommy's shaky hand and squeezing it lightly.
