a/n: hi, it's been a while. i've been on a bit of a mental health break but i'll try to start updating more frequently again.
Today was June 26th. Every year on June 26th, Amara and Charlie went to the local-ish fair that ran from the 24th to the 6th of July. This year, it weren't just the two of them. This year, it was the full group going; Calum, Charlie, Ashton, Amara, Luke and Michael.
Luke had made it his mission to "swoon" Charlie today. His jealousy had taken over and he didn't want Calum anywhere near Charlie. Calum wanted the opposite. The pair both found themselves fawning over the brunette girl, it was starting to become apparent to everyone but Charlie. Call her clueless.
Instead of Amara coming over Charlie and the boys' place, Charlie went over hers deciding she wanted a change of scenery. Amara said she wanted Charlie to go all out so Luke couldn't keep his eyes off her but then realised that he wouldn't be able to do so even if she was wearing a bin bag.
The girls quickly decided their outfits before messaging the boys that they were ready. Michael pulled up in his mini van almost five minutes later. Luke blushed as soon as he saw Charlie. She was quite literally the most beautiful thing in the world in his eyes.
"Hi, sweetheart," he found himself mumbling when she stepped into the van. She grinned at him, sitting down next to him. He subconsciously placed his hand on her thigh and she found herself sucking in a breath. Luke noticed her reaction and pulled his hand away in a state of self consciousness, "m'sorry."
"Don't be sorry," Charlie whispered back, grabbing his hand and placing it back where it was, "I liked it." That made him smile. Only a small one though, he didn't want her seeing his face light up at the tiniest of things.
"How far away is the fair?" Luke asked her, drawing small circles on her skin that gave her goosebumps. He could feel them spreading across her skin and it boosted his confidence a bit knowing that he did that to her.
"Around a half an hour drive. You've seriously never been?"
"Never. I'm not a big fan of heights and I get really bad motion sickness," he shuddered at the thought. Charlie giggled at his reaction and placed her hand on top of his, smoothing it.
"I'll make sure you're okay," she reassured to which he smiled, "... by throwing you off the top of the ferris wheel."
"Charlie!" He laughed at her, giving her arm a little shove. Luke wrapped his arm around her, placing her into a loose headlock whilst giving her a 'nuggie'.
They're laughs and giggles synchronised together as the sounds lit up the van. The rest of the group found themselves smiling at the interaction, even Calum. The boys liked to see Luke happy and Amara liked how happy Charlie was with him.
Soon enough, they were pulling into the car park of the fair. The group of six got out of the van and headed over to the ticket booth. Luke was quick to offer to pay for Charlie's ticket even though she protested against it. However, the tall dirty blonde didn't give up and eventually the shorter one gave in.
Almost instantly the group dispersed into smaller groups. Calum and Ashton, Luke and Charlie and Amara Michael.
Charlie was eager to go on the bumper carts so that's the first thing she dragged Luke to. Her eager little squeals made him swoon easily and he was supposed to be the one swooning her!
"Can I drive, Lu?" She beamed like a kid in a toy
shop. Of course, Luke nodded which made Charlie smile even more which he didn't know was possible. "Okay, you're on acceleration."The pair got into the tiniest of bumper cars. It had the number three on the side and was purple - Charlie's favourite number and Luke's favourite colour:
As soon as she heard the buzzer go off, she was quick to grip the steering wheel. She started to turn it left but slapped her palm against her head when she realised they weren't moving.
"Luke?"
"Yeah?"
"You have to push the accelerator for us to move."
His mouth formed an 'o'.
"I knew that... I just wanted us to have a steady start, you know?" He covered up, a light blush filling his cheeks.
"Sure thing, hon, now drive!"
Luke pressed down hard on the accelerator and the car jolted forward. Yay, whiplash! The two raced around the track together, ramming into the sides of other people's carts and grinning mischievously when they did. Before long, the buzzer went off again and the carts came to a slow stop. Charlie pouted.
"Don't worry, sweets. We can come back on later," he said and she smiled again, "now what next?"
The two walked around and went to different activities and rides. Luke managed to win Charlie a huge teddy in ring toss and she could not believe her eyes. Nobody had ever won her a bear. After a while, she took hold of the boys hand and led him over to the ferris wheel, much to his protest.
"No. No, no, no, Charlie. I can't do heights, I will be si-"
"I've got you, Luke. Just concentrate on me."
He visibly gulped and squeezed her hand harder as they queued. The two waited patiently for it the queue to start moving. Well, Charlie patiently and Luke anxiously. His free hand tapped against his leg so Charlie stood in front of him and grabbed both of his hands and wrapped them around herself. His eyes widened but she didn't notice a thing. Soon enough, it was there to turn to get on. Charlie had to basically drag the poor man onto the ride.
"You're okay, babe," she reassured him, making sure to hold his hand as the ride creakily ascended.
His legs fidgeted and his eyes were squeezed tightly shut. When they came to a stop, just before the top, he relaxed a little bit. There was no creaks or noises to freak him out. When he opened his eyes, however, the staggering drop to the floor made his stomach drop.
"Look at me, Lu. I'm so proud of you for coming up here."
"Technically you dragged me but I appreciate the sentiment."
She laughed in an apologetic way.
"Will you focus on me?"
He looked up to her eyes. The tension was rising just like their cart once again. They didn't break eye contact as they came to the top. Luke's anxious heavy breathing mixed with her light breaths. Subconsciously, their faces drifted closer to one another's.
"You're so beautiful," he murmured out causing a light blush to tint her cheeks.
Charlie cupped his cheeks to bring his face closer to hers. Just as their lips were about to touch, the cart dramatically jolted and started to lower down.
