Chapter 2 :
The moon had almost disappeared when the girl's eyelids fluttered.
Though she couldn't find the strength to fully open her eyes, it was the first time she became aware of her surroundings.
She lay on a cold, hard surface, she felt uncomfortable and her wrist ached.
Just as unconsciousness began to take over again, she could have sworn she heard slow, nearing footsteps.
~
"I'm not sure if I'm really comfortable doing this," Amber said for what seemed like the hundredth time.
"Oh, don't be a baby. It's not like you haven't done it before," Anaïs brushed her off.
"Can we go over the plan one more time?" Liesa asked, a worry line visible on her forehead.
Everyone groaned simultaneously.
"Please?" Liesa offered sheepishly.
"Fine, one more time," Amandine said, "but this is the last time, okay?"
Liesa nodded fiercely.
Amandine scraped her throat.
"We're all going to head towards the back door where there is only one supervisor. Next we, and that includes you, Liesa, are going to hide behind the corner while Amber goes up to the supervisor. She'll use her power on him so we can escape school without have to deal with an angry guard hot on our heels."
Liesa nodded. "Got it."
Amber gulped and whined: "I really don't know if I can do this. I'm not a full grown siren yet. The spell can work out almost immediately."
Anaïs shook her head.
"You worry too much. Everything will be fine! Let's go!"
The twelve Tormundia students made their way through the quiet hallways. First period had started forty minutes ago and seeing that every period lasted an hour they still had twenty minutes left.
That also meant that everywhere in the school people were having class.
When the younglings passed the classrooms they had to crawl on the ground so they wouldn't be seen through the windows.
It was a pretty funny sight.
Matthieu had gotten fed up with it a while ago and had changed into a tiny, white kitten. He now jumped around the hallways proudly, mocking the others who were all silently glaring at him.
They finally reached the back of the school and everyone but Amber sat down on the ground.
She knew what to do.
Gracefully she started making her way to the school's back door.
Mr Munnings wasn't the prettiest sight to say the least. He was a balding, scary looking man. The only reason why he had gotten the job at Tormundia was that his great-grandfather had been a troll which made Munnings very fit for the position of guard.
With his huge feet and foul body odour he could have passed for a real and not only a quarter troll.
Amber grimaced when she saw him more clearly yet didn't falter her pace.
"Missy, what do you think you're doing here?" Munnings demanded once he saw Amber approaching him.
"Class started a long time ago!"
Amber just looked him straight in the eyes and shushed him gently.
"Don't stress yourself out, sir. All is okay," she all but whispered.
Immediately Munnings' eyes turned glazy and a content smile appeared on his ugly, worn-out face.
"Now," Amber continued when she saw her magic was working," you haven't seen me or any other person all day. You're just overworked. Your mind isn't working properly at the moment. You should probably take the day off and get some rest."
The plan was going perfectly. Munnings was completely intoxicated and seemed to believe every single word she told him.
"Yes, I should do that," he muttered.
And with that he just walked away. He turned around the corner where the others were still laying or sitting on the floor.
That shouldn't have been a problem because Amber clearly said that he, and I quote, 'didn't see her or any other person all day'.
Did you notice the use of the word 'shouldn't'?
When Munnings neared the end of the hallway and everything about the plan seemed to have worked, he stopped dead in his tracks. He slowly turned his head and looked at the white kitten.
"What in the name of God is this beast doing in my hallways?" he bellowed.
The once so peaceful and under-control quarter troll suddenly turned into his true, menacing self again.
Matthieu scurried away quickly and changed back into his human form.
But it had no use.
The spell was no longer working.
They were irrevocably busted...

The girl opened her eyes.
The things she saw were all very blurry, but at least she could see something.
Here gaze wondered to her wrists. Someone had put cuffs on her and attached them to the wall. That same person had closed them that tightly that it caused blood to well up out of a fresh wound.
Gail sobbed, trying to remember what had happened.
She saw flashes of past occurrences and knew that she wouldn't be able to find out what resulted in her being imprisoned.
She diverted her look to the bars. They were made out of steel which meant that she wouldn't be able to get out anyway, her hands serviceable or not.
"Can someone hear me?" Gail yelled with a hoarse voice.
"Please help me!"
Even though the only person who could probably hear her was the one who put her in there, she didn't stop shouting. Everything was better than ignorance.
"Help!"
Somewhere nearby a door opened and the familiar sound of footsteps filled her ears again.
She was now trembling in fear and shrank back against the cold wall.
The prison door opened.
