Chapter 15
"You're kidding, right?" Matthieu all but growled, his expression full of anger.
It wasn't really a question meant to be answered, yet Emmie nodded anyway.
"All this time we've been worrying about him and about what could've happened! All that, while he left voluntarily?" He shouted even louder. "He's even the goddamn reason why Gail and Kenneth are now missing !"
Nina soothingly put her hand on Matthieu's shoulder.
"We're all upset," she whispered," but we can't just forget about Gail and Kenneth. They're still in danger."
Those words seemed to have an effect on the shifter, causing him to calm down and to mumble a muffled 'sorry'.
"Wait," Vic suddenly said, slightly frowning, "how was Kobe able to do all that? He's only human."
The boy, Kevin, let out a bark of laughter.
"From what I've seen and heard he sure isn't," he snorted.
Amandine looked up and stared at the tough-looking girl in front of her. Emmie had her long, brown hair in a braid, was lean and had an angelic face. Her most outstanding feature must have been her beautiful golden wings, gracefully folded behind her back.
Emmie sure wasn't human.
"I think Amandine can answer your question, Vic," Emmie suddenly said, staring intently at the human girl.
They all looked at Amandine, making her blush and quickly look down.
"I just thought that because Emmie clearly isn't human, Kobe obviously isn't either. They're brother and sister," she said, glancing at Emmie for confirmation.
"That's all very true," Emmie said and smiled approvingly at Amandine.
"For 210 years Kobe and I were the same species. Guardian angels," she told them. When the younglings looked at her weirdly she added: "We have the gift to stop ourselves from aging whenever we want. Both my brother and I decided to stop the aging process at the age of seventeen."
"That's pretty cool," Liesa voiced her thoughts, eyes wide with envy and admiration.
While everyone seemed to be fascinated by the not-aging part, Amandine was thinking about something else Emmie had said.
"Guardian angels?" Amandine questioned. "How is that possible? If you grew up here in Agmardor you shouldn't be able to hide your wings. Only Fortanians can do that. Yet... I've never even seen Kobe's wings."
Emmie's grin widened.
"Look at that, the human girl is the smartest of them all," she said appreciatively, making Amandine blush once more.
Then Emmie's smile faltered.
"But, you're right. He shouldn't be able to hide them. The reason why you've never seen his wings is because he no longer has them."
"What do you mean? Did someone cut them off?" Jaron asked, wincing at the thought alone. His own wings were not visible to the naked eye seeing how he did have the ability to hide them as a Fortanian wood elf.
"I'll explain," Emmie said, "When Kora died Kobe was furious. He thought it was all his fault, because he had not been quick enough. He turned into a bitter, mean person."
She sighed.
"It didn't last long before he travelled to the demon-dimension, Dymonica. When he came back to Agmardor he had changed. He no longer carried his golden wings and pure aura. He was no longer a guardian angel, but a demon."
