Chapter 16

Gail had made up her mind.

When she had woken up that morning, on the ground with Kobe gone, she had realised how this had to come to an end. She needed to escape.

Jorah would be back that day and, though it had taken her a huge inner battle, Gail had decided to trust him. After knowing him for three weeks she had learned how great of a guy he was. She only hoped that he would be great enough to be willing to help her.

Gail took a deep breath before entering the familiar kitchen.

"Gaily-poo!"

Before she knew what happened, she was being hugged to death by none other than Jorah himself.

"Can't. Breath," she gasped out, which made Jorah laugh and release her.

"Sorry, I'm just happy to see you. Yesterday was awfully boring without your cute, little face to cheer me up," he said, his smile wider than ever before.

"Guess what?" he then asked.

"What?"

"We're making lasagne today!" He cried out in joy and Gail felt herself smile tenderly.

Even though she would much rather just start cooking, she knew this was the right time to tell him everything. So before she could change her mind she said : "That's great and all, but I really needed to talk to you about something."

Jorah furrowed his eyebrows.

"Of course, let's talk then."

Gail closed her eyes, praying that Jorah would react well, before saying : "I'm not here by free will. I was kidnapped. By Kobe."

It stayed quiet and Gail decided to finally open her eyes. There Jorah stood, mouth slightly agape, carrying a look of horror. Gail sighed. That wasn't exactly the reaction she was hoping for. She had hoped for indignation or maybe some pity.

Gail waved her hand in front of Jorah's face.

"Hello? Earth to Jorah?"

He suddenly grabbed her hand and said : "Stop that."

Gail's eyes widened at his sudden seriousness. Jorah's smile had completely disappeared and a grim look had come in its place.

"Let's go somewhere more private," Jorah whispered urgently. Gail looked around her and raised an eyebrow. There was no one other than them in the kitchen. Why did they need to go somewhere even more private?

Pushing these thoughts aside she followed Jorah who guided her to what seemed to be the storage room. He pulled her inside and closed the door.

"Oh Gail, not you too," was the first thing Jorah said. He looked at her as if he were in pain.

"What do you mean?" Gail asked. "Did he kidnap many others?"

He opened his mouth, before closing it again. He started sucking his teeth, deep in thought.

"Yeah, he kidnapped people before. But..." He hesitated. "Well, you're different."

"What are you saying?"

"I'll explain everything to you, I promise. But first I need you to trust me. I'm going to help you, Gail." He shot her a piercing glance.

Gail felt the relief rush through her. He was going to help her. He didn't hate her, nor was he going to tell on her. Jorah truly was her friend.

"I already trust you, Jorah," she said firmly, grasping his hand.

Jorah gave a small, comforting squeeze before pulling his hand back and saying : "I'm happy that you do, but I still feel obligated to tell you."
