Chapter 12

"This is without doubt the best thing I've ever eaten," Gail exclaimed, her mouth chock full with food. They had made risotto with chicken and spinach. It had not only been fun to make, but it also tasted wonderful.

"Unbelievable that we were the ones to make this," she added.

Jorah grinned.

"I've been working here since I was nine. I've had plenty of time to refine certain recipes," he said, his eyes twinkling with joy.

Gail could easily tell how cooking was Jorah's life. She'd never seen anyone talk about something as passionate as he did and it made her wonder if that was the only reason why Jorah looked up to Kobe; because he allowed him to do what he loved.

"So, where are your parents?" Gail casually asked. She may have sounded calm, but mentally she was freaking out. She had been worrying about Jorah's parents for a while now. What if they came in and recognised her as Kobe's hostage? Her plans with Jorah would be ruined then.

Jorah's smile dropped for the first time since she met him and his face turned sullen.

"You don't have to answer that," Gail quickly said, feeling guilty for bringing up something obviously sensitive.

"I'm really sorry, Jorah."

The boy scraped his throat.

"No that's okay. You couldn't have known."

He ran a hand through his black hair, messing it up.

"My parents, uhm, they're gone. They disappeared two years ago, when I was fifteen."

Gale paled.

"Disappeared?" she repeated. "Just like that?"

Jorah coughed and when Gail looked more closely she noticed how he was on the verge of tears.

Now it was Gail's turn to awkwardly scrape her throat as she realised how inappropriate her curiosity was.

"So, are you supernatural? "she asked, feeling how it was time to change the subject.

A tiny smile appeared on Jorah's face.

"One hundred percent human, darling," he said cheerfully, as if he hadn't almost been crying seconds ago.

"What about you?"

"I'm a fairy," Gail said, rolling her eyes. " I could just as well not have been supernatural. The only thing I can do is fly and not even that works every time. I'm like a human bird or something."

Jorah laughed.

"Well, I think being a fairy fits you," he said, then frowned, "But where are your wings? You said you could fly, didn't you?"

"In Forta- I have the ability to retract my wings. That way they're not in the way and are less likely to get damaged."

Gail realised the mistake she had almost made. Giving away where she truly came from was a big no, yet that was exactly what she'd nearly done.

Remember that scene in which Jaron was trying to break his fall by making his wings appear? That was a good example of how most winged supernaturals used their ability. Just giving you an idea.

"That's cool," Jorah noted, before he gave his almost empty plate his attention again.

"Has anyone else noticed the drastic change of climate?"
