Chapter 19
"It's so dark in here," Amandine mumbled to herself as she trudged through the deserted hallway, Matthieu walking along in her wake. She kept opening random doors to see if the room they were looking for was behind one of them, but with no luck.
"Find something?" Matthieu called out from behind her.
She shook her head.
"No. You?"
"Nope. Nothing."
They had decided that Amandine would check the rooms on the left of the hallway, and Matthieu the ones on the right. The choice of hallway was simple. It seemed dark and scary, and would hereby be the perfect place to keep hostages. Somewhere where the employees, if there were any, wouldn't randomly sit down to have a chit-chat.
Bored out of her mind, Amandine threw Matthieu a glance. He was closing the door he had just opened, and let out a big sigh, giving away the fact that he had once again found nothing.
Amandine felt the question she had been holding in for the past couple of weeks, come to the surface. She honestly couldn't help herself when she blurted out: There's something I don't get."
She waited until Matthieu's puzzled eyes met hers, before continuing.
"The day when Amber almost drowned you told us that she had been in some sort of trance, right?"
Matthieu nodded.
"She clearly was, she had this dazed look in her eyes, like she didn't realise what she was doing," he explained.
Amandine hesitated.
"Why weren't you in a trance then? If the water of the lake was cursed, why weren't you affected by it? You were in the water too. I know, because you told us you pulled her out and because your clothes were soaked when we arrived."
Matthieu narrowed his eyes.
"What exactly," he growled, "are you trying to say?"
The sudden hostility only came as a bit of a surprise to Amandine.
It was then she realised that she had known this the whole time.
"It was you!" Amandine yelled out, pointing her finger accusingly at the much bigger boy in front of her.
"It wasn't that lake that almost killed Amber, it was you! You pushed her underwater, causing her to drown!"
"And it would have worked too if it weren't for you," Matthieu said, his voice much deeper than the one Amandine was used to.
He took a step closer, making Amandine do the opposite until she stood with her back against one of the doors.
"You just had to come to Agmardor, didn't you? My plan would have worked out perfectly if it weren't for you. A pitiful-"He pushed her against the door. "-Weak." He reached out towards the door handle. "-Human." With a screeching noise, the door behind her opened. Amandine stumbled away from Matthieu, farther into the room.
"What do you mean, your plan?" Amandine asked, while slowly distancing herself from him. "Do you work for Kobe, or something?"
Matthieu let out a cackling laugh.
"More like the other way around."
"Yes, that's right," Matthieu added when he saw Amandine's shocked expression. "Everything Emmie told you was a lie. Or, well-"He stopped for a moment to let out a chuckle ", what she said wasn't true. Not that Emmie knows that."
