GOD'S FAVOURITE

The dinner table had been tense throughout the Yagami household, at least for those who were watching one another like hawks.

As Sachiko went around to serve her homecooked meal Sayu continued to ramble on about her schoolday (not that everyone's attention had been directed elsewhere) While Soichiro, who feigned interest, had his eyes glued straight ahead. For the time he had spent here the Psychiatrist hadn't done anything worthy of suspicion, much like the rest of his personality Hatori seemed too perfect, happily chatting with the housewife as he occasionally gave a compliment or two towards the household. Much like his father Light had also directed his attention onto something else. Or more like someone.

"So, Ken? Can I address you so casually?" Sachiko teased as she took her seat, nudging her husband underneath the table to join their conversation.

"He's kinda cute," Sayu whispered to her brother who completely ignored the comment in favor of staring ahead, but from the smirk tugging at his lips Hatori had heard each word.

Pushing down the napkin to his lap, a bright grin painted the Doctors' features. "I'd be happy for you too." He cheered. "This is a beautiful house you both own, much better than what Y/N lived in."

Nobody had seen it, why would they even question as his hand grazed her shoulder? The action was completely innocent was it not?

So why did both the Yagami men seem to catch her small flinch at the action?

Light had never seen Y/N show much emotion if any and yet he watched the way she'd nudge her chair away from the man, or the flickering panic in her eyes when his hand moved an inch closer.

"We're lucky to have her here!" Sachiko gleamed, a light flush on her cheeks as everyone dove into their collective meal. "I must ask, is she as shy to you as she is to us? I want to know there's a little hope of getting her out of that shell!" She giggled out, a harmless jab.

"Mom." Light interrupted with a pointed look, his eyebrows twitching at the remark. "She's fine as she is." He replied in a much softer tone than anyone expected.

"Ah, I'm sure she didn't mean it that way." Hatori hummed, but the seventeen-year-old recognized that glint in his eyes, it was the same one he shared when things didn't go his way, when a bother arose. "Y/N's always been on the reserved side, please don't take it personally. The only person she'll open up to when it comes down to it is me. Isn't that right?"

"You took the words right out of my mouth," Y/N mumbled, her head tilted down to her plate as she played with the potatoes by rolling them across the plate. His words, like most of the time, were a warning. A threat to make sure she stayed in her box like always.

"You must be excited to have him join us for dinner, Hmm?" Sachiko inquired, as always she remained oblivious to any growing tensions. Ever the dutiful housewife she began to clear the empty serving plates.

"Why yes." Darting her eyes towards the family she sat up from her position, an overdone smile plastered across her face. "As you can see, I can barely contain myself, but his wife might be worried for him." She mused. narrowing her eyes right back to the psychiatrist. "Isn't that right, Doctor?"

"She has a sense of humor too," Hatori stated sharply, both were aware if it wasn't for the family surrounding them he would've struck her for, as he put it, becoming mouthy.

"Your married?" Soichiro raised a brow, his first attempt to join in on the discussion. "How come I've never heard of her? Or anybody for that matter?"

"By a technicality." The Doctor responded, a strain in his smile as she held back her own. "My wife and I separated years ago due to...Certain differences, we simply wanted different things and found it best to go our separate ways."
