The sunlight had been vibrant today with golden beams entwining themselves into the blooming air of spring. Instead of scorching heat that nobody could withstand it was a gentle kiss from the Dendro and many had embraced its return to Japan with twinkling eyes.

But all that warmth had become a fool's dream the moment she stood in front of that building, a nightmare Palace that she never wanted to lay eyes on again.

Had piles of bricks always been so intimidating? Or were the spirits inside the truly horrifying part?

"I sense hesitance." The demon's remark felt like a whisper lost in the gust of wind heading their way. "Even in my human life I never understood why people had anxieties."

She knew of her trepidation more than anyone, the amusing detail was that if it had been anyone else then she would've also shared his apathetic viewpoint. Maybe that was the humour to be found in fear, not a single living soul could explain it and yet it was felt more than once in a person's existence.

Y/N had heard many people claim love as the biggest motivator, hold what someone truly needs on this earth in the palm of your hand and you can make them bend to your every wish...She would argue fear was more competent.

Adoration was arguably the more powerful emotion but harnessing it was like unravelling wool, eventually, there came a point where it would end.  The things people hold close can be destroyed, they were delicate and that was the Achilles' heal of tugging at someone's heart. How many times can you expect to tear into another's soul before they dispose of it themselves?

Love was powerful...Until it becomes a nuisance to the person your wielding it against.

But fear never faded and neither did the memories accumulating it. No matter how much time passes or what growth was achieved fear would stick like an unwanted flea.

If a person's mind was moldable clay then memories derived from terror were an antithesis. Minds could bend and break but they can't forget, even when they try it'll stick in the brain.

"It's not fear, it's dread." She corrected him. Her hand hovered over the doorknob but never quite turned, instead her choice was to lean against the wall and allow her curiosity to get the better of her. "Ryuk do you remember nothing about your human life? Hasn't you're heart taken the lead before your mind?"

"Bits and pieces." He answered her first question. "I believe I lived freely and without responsibility. I miss that privilege sometimes."

She wondered if he saw the irony in that, giving up the thing you treasured most for a temporary ability. "So what made you give up your freedom?"

"Sorry Girlie." His golden eyes entered a haze for a second, breaths were longer and like a tick, he had gone back to staring at her. "My past life isn't a tale I spin for anyone back home, no mind a random human."

Y/N brought a hand to her chest, pouting in his direction. "I'm hurt." It seemed as if her charms were lost on him. "Indulge me then, was there anything you remember liking or being interested in? If you won't tell me about yourself then let's see if I can dig up a part you took onto death."

"You truly do amuse me." Though the praise had been benign at best for her, to Ryuk it was the highest compliment he could dispel on someone. "I suppose..." The Shinigami pondered for a second. "Music. I think I enjoyed playing music."
