GOD'S FAVOURITE.
ACT TWO.

Ebony-colored shoes strolled across the cobblestone pathway in a chirpy step-to-step dance. Though they had been relatively new, the footwear's shine had been dwindled by sludge-like mud caked on at the front and the thought of tending to them later proved a tedious task Y/N would rather avoid.Skipping over to the small stream behind her home, the thirteen-year-old crouched beside the growing wheat and weeds, slipping the shoes off from her feet and sitting on the pile of grass she dipped the dirtied areas in and the clear water became a murky brown. Nevertheless, the freshwater against her fingers provided a delightful tingle that ran to the back of her spine and she couldn't resist laying still for a second to enjoy the moment of peace.
It was something that would quickly become lost the second she stepped through the front door anyhow.
Shaking off the leftover droplets, she held the pair closely to her chest before sprinting to the door where her slippers awaited, removing her grass-stained socks and placing the shoes on the rack Y/N kicked the door shut behind her. Thankfully, today was Monday, and that meant her Mother wouldn't get home until tomorrow morning. Perhaps it was a vile thing to feel relief that your parent wouldn't be home but the guilt was a burden she'd chosen to bear every single time if it meant being free from that woman.
Absence noted she continued her normal routine for the Afternoon, slinging her bag over the hook and making her way to the living area she pottered around her home doing needless chores, minuscule things that probably didn't even matter, and yet instilled a sense of pride within her. Fluffing the pillows, arranging the remotes on the coffee table, stacking the books, and even just rummaging through the refrigerator and cupboards to make sure none of the food had spoiled or gone past its sell-by date. Balancing two tins and an array of fruit in her grasp she tossed it all into the knitted shoulder sack, ready for her to take out to the trash the next morning.
"Couldn't have taken it with you, Mom?" Y/N whispered under her breath, her brows furrowed as she began chewing on her lip in thought. Along with the milk bottles she'd promised a neighbor to take with her this would only increase the load, at the worst she'd most likely have to wake earlier and make the trip back for her school bag.
Shaking her head and cursing herself for making such a petty comment she hopped on the plastic footstool and then the countertop in an attempt to reach the top of the cupboards, struggling for several seconds as she continued to wave her hand aimlessly along the top a triumphant grin formed on her lips.
Pulling down the bag and unwrapping it she placed one of the strawberry kit kat between her lips. Making her way back to her bag she fished out some headphones before flopping on the sofa, kicking her feet in tune with the song and bopping her head side to side.
Swinging her legs around her momentum had been replaced with a thundering heart, the song only made her head fuzzier as she shoved them to rest on her neck. The door was wide open with another pair of shoes left by the door next to her own. It wasn't fear she felt, nothing ever happened in the village because nobody lived there except those who had grown up in the region, she doubted many city kids even knew it existed, and while a field was between the town and her home it only made it even less likely than someone would venture so far out. But her Mother rarely came home during the weekdays and her Father only took time off every few weeks due to the time-consuming journey outside of Tokyo.
