Riley's POV
"I was going to tell you...sooner" she steps forward.

"I knew you were probably out with your ...friends" she motions towards me " and I didn't want to ruin your fun with such tragic news." She takes another step.

She's about a step away now and I just want to break down. How can she not tell me sooner.

My grandfather means so much to me. We were so close before he moved away to New York when I was 15 that was about 2 years ago. I sniffle and try not to scream, papa is strong. He will pull through, I know it. She tries to comfort me and soothe me with these words.

"Where was he shot at?"

She tears up. "Near the heart. The assailant just barely missed it..." Her voice cracks and she coughs.

I sob loudly and Peter tightens his grip on me and nuzzles my neck again. It's very soothing and it helps put the tears at bay. My mother looks from me to him and takes a breath.

"Like I was saying, I will be gone. For a while. Honestly however long he will need me. He will need support. Surgery will cost a lot. And he will want me there with him...what I'm saying is, I don't know when I'm coming back...but I will keep in contact with you every day. I promise. And you can have your ...friends stay here with you. So that you won't be lonely." I shake from Peters grasp and walk towards my mom.

I hug her and kiss her cheek. "I love you mom, please me safe."

"I will, don't worry, I'm a lot tougher than you will ever hopefully ever have to know." she embraces me in a tight hug.

"You are too honey, remember our training that we used to do, and grandpa taught you how to shoot a gun and arrows...which we have both in the secret places. " she releases me. "And you know to use them if you ever need to? Right?"

I nod. "But why would I ever have to?"

I look into her light brown eyes. I smooth the strand of dark brown hair off of her brown beautiful face.

"You won't." She says quickly, too quickly for me.

"Now I must go." She kisses my cheek and then pats my shoulder and moves past me sniffling into her room.

I stand there, tears streaming down my face. Peter comes up behind me and pulls me around into his chest into a hug.

"You heard your mom. You papa is strong he will pull through just fine. And if he doesn't ...im here for you."
