I walked through the door with you
The air was coldBut something about it felt like home somehow

Maria
A week later I found myself sitting in the back of Mason's car on the way to his house for Thanksgiving. I closed my eyes as Max and Mason argued over music. This would be my first Thanksgiving without my sister and while it made me sad, Max and Mason proved to be a good distraction. Mason made me feel so loved and wanted. It made it a lot easier to move on.
"My babies are home," Becky cheered wrapping us each in tight hugs. How are you, sweetheart?" She asked rubbing my back.
"Good," I smiled. "How are you?"
"I'm just so happy now," she smiled giving Max and Mason another hug.
"Mason, go help Maria take her things to the guest room and get your brother out here," she said. Mason nodded taking my bag and leading me to the guest room. He set my bag down on the bed giving me a kind smile.
"You good?" He asked touching my shoulder gently. He was good at reading me.
"Yeah," I nodded. "Your mom is so sweet."
"She loves you," Mason smiled. "Come on let's go get Clayton."
I nodded following him out of the room. Clayton was sitting in his room playing video games. He was yelling into the microphone when Mason went to stand in front of the tv. "Mom wants you for dinner," he said as Clayton cussed him out.
"Alright, fine," Clayton huffed turning off the tv before standing up.
"Hey Maria, how are you?" Clayton asked turning to me.
"I'm good, how are you?" I asked.
"Good," Clayton shrugged.
That night we ate dinner all together and then Becky made us all watch a movie together. It was nice to feel like I was part of a family again, but at the same time it really just made me miss my own.

Thanksgiving always sucked. Pretty much any holiday sucked. It sucked because it reminded me that my family was shit. I didn't have family. I was just pretending that Mason and his family were mine. All I wanted was a mom and dad who loved me and wanted to be with me. I sat on Mason's back porch drinking a lemonade his mom had made, letting the cold air run through my thin jacket. I didn't want to be around all those people right now. I just wanted to feel shitty. I heard the back door open and figured it was Becky coming to talk me out of my funk. I was surprised when Maria sat down next to me a few seconds later.
"It's cold out here," she mumbled clutching a mug of apple cider in her hands.
