Lover

Maria

About a week after Trent pleaded guilty, my phone started blowing up. I was constantly getting phone calls from unknown numbers and I knew they were my friends in Maine. I was sure they had heard the news by now. Their friend had been sent to jail because of me and I knew they wanted answers. I hadn't answered any calls yet, but I knew at some point, they deserved to hear from me.

"Maria you should really answer that," Sophie sighed as we sat at the kitchen island working on homework.

"She's right, I'm sure your friends are worried about you," Max nodded from the oven.

"You know even if your friends in Maine are pissed at you for some reason, that won't change the fact that we all love you," Mason said reassuringly.

"Alright," I nodded clicking accept on my phone screen. I pressed the speaker button and cleared my throat before letting out a wavering, "hello?"

"Maria, oh my god, Maria is that you?" It was a voice I recognized all too well. It was one of my good friends, who I had known since kindergarten, Annabelle.

"Yes, hi Annabelle," I said chewing on my lip nervously. I could feel Mason's eyes on me and I was thankful that Max and Sophie had busied themselves, but I knew they were listening.

"Maria, I've been looking for you for ages," she said with a sigh of what sounded like relief. "We have all been so worried about you out here. How are you? Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," I replied. "I um... I'm in Washington."

"Yeah, we figured that out. We were just so worried that we did something or you were going to hurt yourself or something. Gosh, it's really just so good to hear your voice," she said seriously. "How is Washington treating you? Are you happy there?"

"I'm really happy," I replied. "It's been a long time since I've been this happy."

"Listen, we heard about what happened to Trent," she said her tone sounding a bit nervous. She had never really liked confrontation. "Did he hurt you?" Her voice came out as a whisper.

"He wasn't who we thought he was," I replied. "He never was."

Sophie placed a hand on mine and gave it a little squeeze. I looked up and gave her a small smile.

"What do you mean?" She asked suddenly seeming to find her voice.

"He... well he hurt Kailey and that's why she... did what she did," I said as my eyes started to well with tears. "Then he found me here and he broke into my apartment and tried to hurt me too. Luckily my roommate stopped him before he could."

"It's alright babe," Mason whispered into my ear giving my shoulder a squeeze.
