"Hold onto the memories, they will hold onto you"

Maria

New Year's Eve came too quickly. Our week of bliss passed in the blink of an eye and in two days we would be back to school and work. The night I was planning on getting absolutely plastered. I didn't really want to remember this year at all, so getting drunk for one night was the way to go. Mason was at home getting ready, so I took a shower and began working on my hair.

I managed to tame my shoulder-length curls and brushed on some mascara before going to my closet. I found a pair of flare jeans, a low-cut top, and a jean jacket. I was pulling on my white boots as I heard Max grumbling about how long it took for me to get ready.

"Are you ready to get wasted tonight?" I asked him as I bounded down the hallway.

"Oh absolutely," Max chuckled as Mason kissed my cheek. "Drunk Maria is hilarious."

"You know this is the first time I'll get a new year's kiss?" I asked Mason as I took his hand.

"Well I'm honored," Mason said and Max chuckled.

"Mason's mom is usually his New Year's kiss," Max laughed.

"Is that true?" I giggled looking up at Mason.

"She throws a little neighborhood party every year," Mason shrugged. "Come on let's get going."

"Alright," I nodded. We followed him out of the apartment and to his car.

Maria was wasted. I had never seen her drink so much and I was honestly worried. This wasn't like the other times I had seen Maria drunk. She usually just drank enough to get tipsy and she was always a happy laughing drunk. Tonight she just looked so sad as she hung on to my arm and stared into space. She was way past tipsy and I knew she wasn't going to remember any of this tomorrow.

"Who are you going to kiss tonight Max?" She slurred moving to rest her head on Max's shoulder. Her hand was still attached to mine.

"I don't know, I'm thinking maybe we should head home early," Max said and I felt a rush of relief. I knew that he could see something was wrong with Maria too. He didn't know her as well as me, but he knew her.

"Why would we do that?" Maria slurred her lips pouting. "I want to take another shot."

"Maria I don't think you should drink anymore," I said rubbing her back.

"Mase I want to be drunk," she whined.

"Babe you're way past drunk," I said kissing her lightly.
