"Casually cruel in the name of being honest"

-Taylor Swift

Maria

Wrapped in a towel, I couldn't even look at myself in the mirror and I knew I couldn't face Max and Mason's worried faces.

"You alright in there babe?" Mason asked tapping the door as I slid to sit against it. I rested my head in my hands. I knew that Max and Mason were going to do everything they could to make me feel better, but they were guys and they just didn't get it.

"Can you call Sophie?" I asked my voice coming out small and weak. I hated how much I was falling apart. I could only imagine how much pain and turmoil Kailey had been in.

"Sure babe, you want me to invite her over?" Mason asked his voice calm. I knew he was hiding how he really felt right now. I knew he wasn't calm and I knew I was probably breaking his heart by not asking for his help, but I needed Sophie. She understood more than Mason or Max ever would.

"I'll do it," I heard Max mumble before I heard his boots stomp away. Max had grown a lot since I had met him a few months ago. He was so much more open and emotionally vulnerable. Now I was taking advantage of that. I felt awful knowing how much I was hurting both of these men, who had only helped me through my life.

When I finally heard Sophie walk through the front door, I was cold and shivering still resting on the cold tile floors of the bathroom.

"Maria?" She asked softly giving the door a gentle tap.

"Come in," I mumbled scooting away from the door to rest against the wall instead. The door creaked open and Sophie slipped in before I could even get a glance at Mason or Max.

"Hey," she said coming to sit down next to me.

"Hi," I sighed as my wet hair continued to drip down my bare shoulders, my towel still wrapped tightly around my torso.

"Max called me," she said. "He said you wanted me."

"Yeah," I sighed resting my chin on my knees.

"Do you want to get dressed first or are we going to stay here?" She asked her voice gentle and nonjudgmental.

"I want to go to my room," I said brushing my hands through my hair, "but I don't want them to see me. They're freaking out and I can't..."

"I'll handle it," Sophie nodded before standing up and slipping out of the bathroom door.

"Go sit with Max in his room," Sophie said and then I heard Mason start to protest, but a look in Sophie's eyes must have made him change his mind because his footsteps receded down the hall. I felt awful. I knew Mason just wanted to help, but I knew that if he saw how torn up I was it was only going to hurt him. I felt the tears start to slip down my cheeks again as I thought of how torn up he probably already was and it was all my fault. The door opened and Sophie held her hand out to me.
