As I sat at the island eating breakfast a knock on the door startled me from my thoughts about how worried I was for Maria. I got up and found Sophie standing at the door a worried frown resting on her face.

"Hey," I said moving aside so she could step inside.

"Hey, is Maria up yet?" She asked brushing her hair back.

"No, well at least I haven't seen her," I sighed leading her back to the kitchen.

"Did she seem alright after I left?" Sophie asked fiddling with her hands.

"I think seeing and talking with her uncle helped," I explained and Sophie nodded.

"How are you doing?" I asked knowing that it hadn't been that long ago that she had lost her mother and now she was putting all that aside to help Maria.

"I'm alright," Sophie shrugged. "I mean it's hard seeing Maria like this because for all the time I've known her she's never been the one asking for help. She is always the one helping us. It's just hard to see her this way."

"Yeah, I'm not usually the one to provide emotional support, but I guess that being around Maria the past few months has taught me how to help her because lord knows she's been so patient and supportive towards me."

"She's changed all of our lives and now we need to help her through this," Sophie nodded in agreement.

"Well, um if you need to talk to someone about stuff, I'm around," I said awkwardly.

"Thanks, Max, that's really sweet of you," she replied patting my shoulder. We heard a door open and close and a few seconds later Maria appeared in the kitchen rubbing her eyes.

"Hey good morning," she said moving to the kitchen.

"How are you feeling, Maria?" Sophie asked from her spot at the island.

"I'm alright," she said giving us a small smile. It wasn't the most convincing I had seen, but it was better than yesterday.

"What are you up to today?" I asked watching her.

"My uncle hired us a lawyer and we're supposed to have a meeting in a few hours," she replied pulling an apple out of the fridge.

"Are you going to be okay with that and talking about everything?" Sophie asked.

"I'll be fine," Maria said with a shrug.

"You know you don't have to be, right?" I asked leaning on the counter.
