First, I used a water based-clay on wood board to create a mold, then created a silicon cover to which I poured in plaster to create the actual sculpture. Then, I painted a thin layer of black and brown over it to emphasize the contrasts. Lastly, to bring out the highlights, I took a thin piece of sand paper and scrapped off some of the paint. All white areas are done using this technique.

This was my first high relief sculpture! For this of you hesitant to try 3D art, I have to say GO FOR IT. I was so afraid to make the transition from 2D to 3D, but I find that blending the two in a relief is actually a great way to get started.
