Chapter 22
Another eight hours passed with little excitement. I was now at the village, as I was getting closer to Miranda's house I was at an utter loss of words, Miranda hung like a black cloud at the back of my thoughts, a constant reminder of how bad I was feeling about leaving her for much longer than I stated. I managed to get to the front door in one piece, my right leg was bleeding, my arms were both covered in scratches, but at least I was alive.
As soon as I opened the door a cold breeze ran through my whole body, the house was freezing with a deep scent of lilies mixed with an unforeseen bitterness. With a bewildered look I saw not one, but three wine bottles on the coffee table, two were empty and the last one half drank. Miranda was sitting there drinking from a crimson glass.
"Where have yyyou been?" She stated, without turning around.
"Well things were... complicated"
"You didn't call." Miranda said coldly, taking the last sip of her expensive wine.
"Enough with that, give it to me" you took the bottle of wine from her hand. "The work that I do is very demanding, and you don't exactly own a phone?"
You left your belongings on the floor, exhaustion drained through your body. You sat next to her, but she turned her head to the other side, she was trying to hide her tears from you. You stroke her cheeks between your hands, and wiped her tears, she was very drunk, her eyes were narrowing more and more. You knew she didn't want you to see this side of her, she sobbed into your shirt, twisting her fingers into it.
"I'm not going away again Miranda"
"Who did this to you!?" She asked in shock, touching your leg, you winced in pain, and shook your head "It's nothing, don't worry about it"
She laid you on the couch, carefully disinfected your wound, but it was worst than what she'd imagine, so she had to do the necessary suturing and wound repair.
Without warning, she flung into your arms. You stood there, She pressed you gently against the couch carefully not to touch any of your wounds. A shudder of relief rippled through her, and you sank your fingers into her shirt, dragging her against you , you needed her close in a way you never did before. Her mouth pressed and tasted yours. You then pulled away from the kiss and she rested her head on your lap, her eyes locked with yours, making your heart beat as fast as the first time. You caressed her forehead, removing a few strands of hair from her face.
You started humming her favorite melody, the one that you would listen back in 1900, every night before going to sleep, she smirked."I just want to be in your arms" Miranda muttered, in a sleepy voice.
"You'll be in my arms forever"
We slept all night long, on the couch. I wake a couple hours later, disoriented, battling my way out of the, big black blanket and Miranda over my body. Drool has dried along one of my cheeks, 'disgusting' i thought.
I looked back at Miranda, and I covered her with the blanket again, I gazed at the house, which was a mess, everything was out of place, papers, half drank tea cups, piles of books, bottles.
Today, Chris is going to give me the phone I asked him for, it was for Miranda, she hates technology, but, I need to communicate with her by any means if I have to go somewhere.I finished cleaning, and the house was alive again, the fireplace was burning, and the ambience smelled like lilies.
Outside the air was warm and quiet. I was running for the remaining cement steps leading down to the road, I drove to the tent, but before getting in I made a split-second change of plans I sat on a rock in the sunbeam deliberately trying not to look into my thoughts. Chris appeared behind me, and he sat next to me.
"Lost in your own mind?"
"Nothing new, right?" You chuckled. "Could you get that for me?"
"Yes, here" he took a box from his bag, it contained the phone for Miranda.
"Y/n I still don't get it, why her? You're intelligent, beautiful, and most of all kind to everyone around you" he said handing the box to you. His voice was so measured, so steady, I didn't know how he felt about what he'd just told me. In return, I didn't know what to say.
"Chris, have you ever been in love? I guess I'm blinded at some point, yes. But I can't imagine my life without her"
"Yes, I know how it feels, but I'm only telling you the sickening truth..."
Back at Miranda's house I ransacked my wine-soaked memory as I made my way to our now, shared bedroom, dodging piles of books and lumps of clothing, the wind sneaking through the big windows, Miranda, she was still drunk but at least she was awake.
"Mmh...What's that?" She pointed the box between my hands. I left my jacket on the wooden chair next to the door and sat on the bed, next to her and covered your legs with the warm blanket.
"It's for you" you chuckled and gave the box to her.
She opened the box, sloppily. She stared at the phone like if it was the hardest riddle to solve. You let out a giggle, she looked at the phone again then at you.
"How am I supposed to use this? I don't even know how to turn it on" she glared at you, but you couldn't stop laughing.
"Well is not that difficult, you'll get better at it. Here, this button is to turn it on" You explained her everything, you were impressed by how fast she learns everything. Of course she wasn't interested in social media, and the only contact she added was you. The only thing she was amazed with, was the information provided in the internet. I couldn't get her out of the phone now, I smirked at how cute she looked like with her phone.
"This filthy devices... they're not that bad" she said without looking at you.
"Yes, but you're not giving attention to me" you started, pouting your lips and crossing your arms.
She laughed while she left her phone aside and pulled you closer to her, holding you between her arms and kissing your neck. But then she stopped.
"What's in your mind, love?" She asked grabbing a strand of your hair and placing it behind your ear.
"Nothing, I was thinking about Annette, she died yesterday, in front of me"
"Annette? Who's that?" She furrowed her eyebrows.
"She worked for me, and she was my friend. But also, I'm worried about Elena, I want everything to go as I planned"
"You are the best at it, besides Elena is perfectly fine Y/n don't worry about that" she kissed your forehead.
"Y/n"
"Hm?"
"I heard you talking with him today"
"Who? Chris?"
"Yes. It's true, what you've heard about me. It's true. I've been careless with the people I've loved in my life. I've done—
Not sure it's necessary to give you the grocery list of my wrongs, you already know my secrets.
I've done some horrible things in my life—I've hurt people, with good intentions, if such a thing exists.
That is as far as I'm going to go, I don't—I don't, I can't take it further than that but I want you to know that with you, I am willing to go as far as possible.
I have changed and I am yours and I will never hurt you Y/n.""Miranda, I know. You don't have to excuse with me for being yourself , I love you no matter what" you said kissing her lips again.
