Clay POV
As my first 2 lessons of the morning finish I meet up with the other guys for a 15 minute break. After last night I was still yet to apologise to my mum but I planned to after school. I didn't mean to snap at her, especially since she was trying to help me.
"Clay Clay! Have you had the new boy in any of your classes yet?" Karl asks, Nick and Alex still had a confused look on their face. "Theres a new boy?" I question as I swap out my books with the ones in my locker.
"Really? He's in my art class" Karl states which earns a smile from Nick "Karl none of us take art except you" He giggles as his face tints with red "Oops I forgot that" "So what's he like?" Alex asks as we all begin walking to our next class.
"Well, he's like that quiet kid in our year, what's his name? The one that doesn't talk" "You mean Callahan?" I ask in which Karl nods a response before carrying on. "He doesn't talk either, and a lot of his face is covered with a scarf and his hair, its a little weird but I'm sure he's nice"
We all nodded in agreement, none of us had properly met him so it's not like we had anything to judge him by. Callahan was a decent friend of ours too, we didn't hang out too often but we had each others backs.
Once we arrived into our English lesson we took our usual seats, looking up to be met by our teacher who seemed to be in a better mood than usual. "Class today we have a new student, Greg, I want you to respect the fact they cant talk in the same manner we do for Callahan" Mr Schlatt motioned over to a student sitting at the front.
"Now that the introductions are out of the way, let's get on with todays class" he walked back over to the board, most people now turning around to make conversation. "Do you think he has any friends yet?" Karl asked as the rest of us turned to face him. "Probably not, him and Callahan will probably get along really well" Nick added.
"If he doesn't have anyone with him at lunch we should invite him to join us" Karl suggested and we nodded, turning back to pay attention. I looked over to the new boy at the back of his head, he wore a beanie with his hoodie up, sat up in his chair paying attention like everyone else.
English dragged but the lesson finished, the bell signifying lunch. We all stuffed our work into our bags and headed out the door, walking into the cafeteria to eat our lunch.
We sat making normal conversation until Wilbur came over, leaning over the table to get my attention. "I thought Id let you guys know football tryouts are tomorrow so if you want to get on the team make sure you bring your kits to the changing rooms early tomorrow" he smiled before patting my shoulder, walking back over to his table.
"So are you guys going to rejoin the football team?" Karl asked, he wasn't into football but always came to watch us play anyway. "I should probably get more active, it might be good for me" Nick stated, looking over at me and Alex for answers "Sure, if your doing it then I might as well" I added, Alex nodding in agreement.
Nick and Alex got straight into a conversation about football, I was about to chime in when I noticed Karl staring at something behind me. I followed the direction his eyes were looking and saw the new boy sitting on a table with Callahan.
He was facing our direction this time, he had a neck warmer pulled up past his nose, his loose strands of hair making almost impossible to see his skin underneath, he looked exactly like Karl had explained earlier. I turn back to the table, snapping Karl out of his thoughts as we continued talking.
The end of the day finally came, I wasted no time in making my way to my car and driving home. Guilt was eating away at me and I had to apologise. I pulled my car up outside and locked the door, then walking into my house.
"Mum? Are you home?" I shouted, hearing a response in the kitchen I took my shoes off and threw my bag on the floor to go over. "Im sorry about yesterday-" I look to see Georges mum here too and I smile, not expecting her to be here.
"Don't be silly, you're alright" she smiles, patting a stool next to them both for me to sit down. "How was school?" Georges mum asked "It was interesting, we have a new student now" "What're they like?" she asked and I shrugged. "He doesn't talk and he covers his face so I'm not quite sure..I'll let you guys talk, I need to find my football kit" I say, getting down from the stool.
"Your trying out this year?" My mum asked me and I faintly smiled "Yeah, all of us but Karl of course" she looked happy as I made my way up the stairs. I looked under my bed and pulled out my duffel bag, unzipping it to check the contents in it, seeing my old t-shirt with my name and number.
"I dont know what number I want" Clay huffed as he tried to think of the number he wanted on his football shirt. "Its just a number Clay, pick your favourite" Nick states, him and Alex had already picked their numbers. Nick had chosen 3 and Alex had chosen 5. "Why dont you choose number 1? " Karl suggests and George smiles "Yeah Clay, after all you're our number one" he giggles when he sees Clays smile grow "Alright number 1 it is" he finally agrees and everyone sighs out, thankful he finally made a decision.
