Josie POV
I groan as I get up. My side hurts from yesterday's beating. Why can't I go one day without getting beaten? Not even my parents can help me. Let me explain. I was born a runt. I'm smaller than the average wolf... Way smaller. In our pack, runts are hated. My parents are the Alpha and Luna. The only person who truly understands me is my twin sister. She is a runt as well. Usually I take her beatings for her.
We are together so often our scents mix. Either one of us could take the others beating but sometimes I can't. Its either because I'm out cold or she has healed too much and it looks suspicious. Our entre lives we've only been able to link each other. She speaks. I'm mute. That's our main difference. We've been told we don't have mates as the moon Goddess wouldn't punish a wolf so severely.
"My wolf is antsy..." Em says. I call her Em, short for Emberly. "Mine too..." I link once I think about it. She paces in my mind. Something good is coming. I inwardly scoff. Nothing good ever happens. "Better go make breakfast before school." She says. "Hey girl. Why doesn't the second you speak?" One of the other prisoners in a cell says. We sleep in the basement. The only open area here. We used to be in a cell but the pack members got tired of always having to let us out.
"She's mute." She says shortly. "Why?" He asks. She glances at me. "Because she can't speak? She's never been able to." He nods and smiles at me. "Get away from this place girlie. This isn't the right pack." He says before laying down. Em looks at me confused and I shrug.
We walk out together to make breakfast. We make it quickly and head to school. All of our classes are together. We don't separate.. ever. Today seems a bit odd. In our first class I answer everything for Em. It's math. The class I'm actually good at.
"Josie. Solve this problem." The math teacher says. She's a Blood Moon wolf. I'm from the Silver Moon pack. I nod and answer it easily. She smiles at me but I duck my head and look at the ground. "Runt got it right." My big brother says with a smirk. The teacher watches me closely. M brother stands. I start to take a step back but remember not to show my fear. Other wise the other packs will get suspicious.
"Speak when spoken to, runt." He spits. He raises a hand as if to slap me and I flinch. He remembers the audience. "Haha! You fell for it my dear sister. Don't be silly. You know I could never hurt you." Em scoffs. He turns his glare to her. "You ok?" He asks in a sickly sweet voice. It takes everything in me not to cringe.
"Matthew! Take a seat." The teacher says. He glares but does as he is told. I go back to my seat beside Em who is trembling. Hey, calm down. I wont let him hurt you. The teacher is watching us closely. We need to pretend we are perfectly normal. We don't need any more trouble.
She nods and forces herself to sit still. "Emberly and Josie stay after school. I have a student that needs you to tutor him." I look at my brother to see if it's ok and he gives a small nod, but there is a glint in his eyes that promises punishment later. "Yes, miss." Em says.
We spend the rest of math class having a conversation through mind link. I wish we met our mates. Em says. I look over at her. I doubt I have one. You do for sure but why would the moon Goddess give someone a mute runt Omega? Sure you're a runt but you never acted as an Omega. Even if you did it was just that. An act. I'm instinctively submissive.
You're only submissive because they beat it into you! You aren't naturally that way! It is instinctive because it is what you have to d to survive! You are broken! You need your mate to fix you. You need him.
She has a point. I still might not have a mate though. Even if I do who would want me? He would probably reject me first chance he gets. No one would ever want to stay with me. I'm bad luck.
I sigh inwardly as class ends and I'm forced to go to lunch. Em has library duty so she won't be there. As I walk in every one of my pack members go silent. Then so does Blood Moon to see what happens.
"Hey runt! Where's your other half?" Future Beta asks. I look at the ground. He growls. "Answer when spoken to! I know you can speak! Stop pretending just for attention!" He snarls. I continue to look at the floor. "Talk!" My brother says in his alpha tone. I continue to look at the floor.
"How dare you go against Alpha's orders!" He bellows. I whimper and start to cower. He stomps towards me. "It's against pack rules to not listen to your Alpha." He snarls and goes to hit me. I flinch and whimper, shutting my eyes tight. When the hit doesn't come I look up to see the Alpha of Blood Moon pack, looking down at me with out an expression.
"Let me go. I'm punishing this runt Omega." Matthew says. Em comes running in. When she sees the Alpha glaring at me she rushes over. "Alpha sir?" She asks. "What other runt?" He asks. "Please don't punish her. I heard your Alpha command to make her talk. You know, we Omega's can't disobey an Alpha command. Please, brother spare her or punish me as well." Em pleads.
Matthew breaks the Alpha's hold long enough to slap Em. For the first time ever, I do something I was afraid to do. I growl at my brother. I made a noise. "N-no touch sister! No hurt!" I yell. Em looks at me surprised. "You spoke!" She yells. "Why do you speak like a small child?" Matthew laughs. "No one taught her to speak Alpha. You guys raised me properly to age five. You immediately left her." He growls at Em. She fake cowers. I growl and he slaps me.
"Keep your hands off of my mate!" The Alpha yells
