Kingdom of the Red Rose (Episode 44 of 62) Chapter Sixteen: Nathaniel and Emma (Part 2 of 3)
Six weeks had gone by since the assassin fainted in the stable. He had survived a terrible fever and most of his wounds had healed, but he wasn't able to move freely yet; his stomach still hurt from time to time. Everyone called him Nathaniel and he had accepted the name. It was a warm night, and he was sitting with Paul outside a small cabin that was behind the Hartley mansion at the other end of the farm. A small oil lamp burned steadily on the wall behind them, and they were drinking and staring at the night sky.
"Do you ever wonder if there's anything, or anyone, out there waiting for you?" Paul finished his drink and leaned back against a tree trunk.
"You'd think I would, but for some reason I don't," Nathaniel leaned forward and placed his elbows on his knees.
"I don't blame you. I don't think I would either if I were you."
"Why is that?"
"We found you with a bullet wound, bleeding and freezing to death. Someone wanted you dead."
"I guess you're right."
"Not to mention that the scars on your body tell a story of a man who...well let's just say it doesn't look like you were a man of high society."
Nathaniel chuckled, "No, I guess not," he jerked his head up and stared into the darkness.
"What?" Paul was alarmed.
Nathaniel raised his hand and cut Paul off. "There's something moving towards us," he whispered.
Paul heard grass being crushed and his eyes searched into the darkness for the source. He spotted two figures in the distance walking towards them; these people knew where they were going. As soon as they walked into the light of the oil lamp their identity was revealed, two workers of the Hartley family.
"Hey Paul," they both turned and nodded at Nathaniel, greeting him.
Nathaniel replied with a nod as well.
"What are you two doing here this late? I thought you'd be on your way home by now," Paul replied.
"Masters said they'll be riding to town tomorrow morning. We decided to stay here for the night and wake up early to prepare the carriages," one of the two men said.
"Why wasn't I told of this?" Paul asked.
"Madam Emma won't be going."
"I see. Well, you stayed here before. You know where the rooms are. Just don't take the first one on the left, that's Nathaniel's room now."
