Chapter Twenty-Three: A Threat to Heaven and Hell
(Part 3 of 4)By now Griffin would have healed and jumped to his feet, ready to charge at the apparition again. But he realized it would not work, and so he tried another approach. He knew the Devil would never lose the opportunity to show off, to talk. "Then why do you fear the Archangels? How did Gabriel manage to beat you?"
"I FEAR NO ONE!" the Devil raged, showing his true colours for a moment. "That pesky little traitor just got lucky during our last fight."
"Why do I find that hard to believe?"
"Perhaps I need to demonstrate to you a bit more of my power. You on the floor broken apparently is not enough to convince you. Here, let me break your spirit, for my torture techniques only begin at the physical level."
Lucifer snapped his fingers and at the corner of the room the ceiling parted ways, dropping down a metal cage. Within that cage was Emma's soul.
"Nathaniel?" Emma immediately recognized the soul that lay on the floor. "What is he doing here Lucifer? We have a deal."
"Watch your tongue, woman. He's here of his own free will. I will kick him out soon enough, but first I need to take him apart."
"Emma!" Griffin jumped up and flew to the cage.
Lucifer began to laugh and snapped his fingers again. The cage was sucked back up and it disappeared. But with it so did Griffin. The Devil's laugh was cut short as Griffin appeared behind him, both hands piercing the Devil's back at the shoulder blades next to his wings.
"Nice trick Devil, but I'm not here for her," Griffin said as he pushed his hands deeper and began searching around in Lucifer's chest. The apparition made all the right noises; flesh being torn and squashed around. But the Devil made no sound. He just stood still and faced forward. "I know I cannot take her from you. Your deal is considered valid, so I will kill you. That way she will be free..." Griffin paused as his hands locked together within the Demon's chest, having searched every inch of it, without finding a soul.
The Devil unleashed a fit of laughter. "Oh, this is just too good to be true. I can sense the fear that now overwhelms you. What are you wondering, Griffin? Are you wondering where my soul is? Are you surprised you cannot find it?" his roaring laughter never stopped as he faded out and stepped backwards, his apparition moving over Griffin and encasing him within it. "Here, now you can claim we are one. Can you feel my soul young Grim Reaper? No? Then perhaps I do not have one," he took two more steps back and separated from Griffin before fading back in.
