Chapter Eight: Mana Measurements
(Part 3 of 3)

When Griffin started regaining consciousness he was inside his tent. Haron and Lance were standing outside talking and Griffin could see their shadows cast on the side of the tent from the mana lamps around the camp.

"Are you absolutely sure, Haron?" Lance asked in disbelief.

"Yes, I'm sure Lance. The boy has never had any field training. The Council decided I should train Griffin personally, and they didn't assign any Angels to help with his training like they did when I trained you and the other Grim Reapers. Only Valentina is working with him, but she is helping him with theoretical studies. Last I checked Valentina has no experience out in the field. And as I told you before, this is Griffin's first time out of Heaven. We haven't started his combat training yet, theoretical or otherwise."

"But the way he moved. Haron you should have seen him; Angels have a hard time dodging my attacks as he did. For God's sake he adapted so quickly you'd think he was used to this sort of fighting."

"I told you not to underestimate him, didn't I?"

"Yeah, but I never expected him to be that good. I am telling you Haron, this new guy somehow has combat experience."

"Hey, Haron? Lance?"

Griffin was about to get up when Haron jumped in the tent and screamed, "Do not move," almost knocking over the front pole of the support beam at the entrance.

"Calm down Haron. He probably can't even lift his head after last night," Lance kneeled at the entrance of the tent and leaned his head in.

"I just don't want him to move the reading stones. He needs to lie still until he has fully regenerated."

"It's only been twenty-four hours since he depleted his mana. He won't be able to move for at least another twelve hours, and that's if he is skilled at regenerating," Lance replied.

Griffin leaned his head from side to side and noticed there were several stones placed around him and three on his chest. At first glance the stones looked like ordinary, black, smooth stones from the nearby beach, but on closer inspection Griffin noticed they rhythmically shone a gentle yellow glow every couple of seconds. "What are these?"

"They are called reading stones. They measure the mana you accumulate over time and then we can use those measurements to compile an almost accurate reading of your mana reserves and abilities at your current stage. We can even get an approximation of the maximum level of mana you can ever reach."
