Marinette didn't think she'd heard Alfred right.
"Come again?"
"I believe that someone was fixing a broken miraculous."
"Wha...but...how?"
"In ancient texts thought to be lost, there was a spell one could use to fix a broken miraculous. The only problem is that fixing a broken miraculous steals the energy-the life force-of the current guardian. The guardians rarely survived the process, and usually the kwamii was to damaged to even make the effort worth it. You see, when a miraculous gets broken, every time it gets used. It tears down on the kwamii, rendering them effectively useless, unless you want kwamii tears."
"Thats....great. Is that why I spazzed out in the hallway?"
"I would say yes."
"And why do you think that it's connected to Duusu?"
"Well a long time ago I-"
"Woah...let me stop you right there. Is this going to be a long story?"
"Uh....probably."
"Well then, as much as I want to hear about how you know about the Order, I would love to not be covered in blood even more. So while I'm in the shower, you can figure out what you want to talk about. And maybe you can help out Jason. He looks like he's about to pass out." Marinette pushed herself off the bed, letting out a small laugh when she didn't fall over. She flounced to the bathroom attached to her room and disappeared.
"Well it's nice to see she's feeling better." Jason laughed nervously before falling silent again. It was a full five minutes before either one of them said something.
"So I assume-"
"Alfred what is-"
"You first, Master Jason."
"No, you go first."
"Well, then. I assume you have questions?"
"Alfred what is going on? I thought that the only "magic" I was gonna have to deal with was gonna be from the League, but now there's some other kind? And Marinette apparently is having this whole other...other life? And being bullied? And fighting crime? And she didn't tell anyone and is just letting all of us hate on her? And I don't understand why."
"Marinette is a very special person. I felt it the second I met her in the airport. She has light about her that very few people ever do. And to live through everything she has, and still be able to smile? That is a testament to her true strength. She is the true Guardian. No doubt about it."
"We can help though, can't we? I mean, we can at least find out Hawkmoth's identity for her. Right?"
"I would expect no less, Master Jason." They sat in a comfortable silence for the next few minutes, until the shower shut off and Marinette's singing filled the air.
"Alright gentlemen, now that I no longer look like I committed mass murder, shall we continue this convercation? Remember you only have to tell me what you want. Not anything else."
Alfred froze. On one hand, he did not want to admit his failings with Dussu, but on the other, there was no way to explain to Marrinette what had happened, and why he had known about it, without doing so. He sighed, knowing that at long last he would have to admit his failings to the world.
"Actually, Miss Marinette, to fully explain everything, I must start at the beginning.
"Years ago, when I was a very young boy, I was brought to the temple of the Guardians. I was to train to become the next guardian, and I devoted years of my life to training to be the best I could be. Unfortunately for me, I was not the only one training for the spot. Every year, there would be tests that would weed the weak out. And every year, the tests would get harder. One year, when I was about 13, our task was to watch over the Miracle Box for 24 hours. the first 12 went by just fine, but then I started to get hungry. And thirsty. And my legs hurt from standing so long. And I was bored. So I played with the Miraculous. I knew it was wrong, but I was young, and immature. I felt most in tune with the peacock Miraculous, and became well acquainted with Duusu over the next few hours. She was..well...she was a force to be reckoned with, that's to be sure.
"You were her chosen?" If he was, Marinette would be very happy.
"Yes. That is one of the only times I had ever disobeyed my elders, but it was the only time I didn't feel bad about it. After the trial of watching over the Miracle box, there was only two of us left. Me, and a boy about my age named Wang Fu. We had been fairly competitive, and he was always just a little bit ahead of me, but we were best friends. But we had both passed.
"So that day we both received a miraculous. I, of course, chose Duusu. And Fu chose Wayzz.
"We weren't allowed to keep the Miraculous with us all the time, so I would sneak out to go see Duusu at night. She would help me learn the powers of the Peacock, and we became fast friends." Alfred paused for a moment, looking sadder than Jason and Marinette had ever seen him.
"Here, I'm afraid, is where I made my mistake. One night, we were attacked by the League. The current guardian grabbed the miracle box and gave it to Fu. We both transformed and ran off, together, fighting our way through fires and crumbling pieces of roof. And then something exploded. I was flung one way, Fu another. We never saw each other again. The peacock Miraculous was torn from my chest, hurting Duusu and breaking the miraculous in the process."
Marinette gasped softly.
"So that's how it broke."
"And that is where we parted ways. I haven't felt her since that day, despite her miraculous being active. Until this afternoon. Well, yesterday afternoon. I was cleaning up lunch when I felt her presence. And when I saw you, Marionette, I knew she had been fixed." Marinette yawned and rubbed her eyes,
"Well, I think it's time for everyone to go to bed." Alfred glanced at Jason, who was laying slumped over in the desk chair. He layed a blanket over him and turned to leave.
"Alfred? He turned to face Marinette. "Thank you."
"Of course."
