You didn't fall into a very deep sleep, just in case Leo woke up again and needed you, and woke up around every ten minutes to check on him. And sure enough, he slept well for a while until around 12:45am when he woke up in a hysterical coughing fit that he couldn't stop. You felt his breath catch and your eyes opened instantly to look down at him in concern. His breathing continued to be rough and harsh for a while until his tired blue eyes opened fully and he started coughing. And coughing... And coughing....
You sat him up a little bit, but he could barely hold himself up, so you took most of his weight and held him up as he trembled and continued coughing. You rubbed his chest with one hand and rubbed his shell with the other, waiting for him to finish coughing and catch his breath.
When his coughing finally settled, you lay him gently back down against the pillows as he gasped rapidly for air, and swung your legs down off the bed to grab him some water. He coughed a few more times as you got him the glass, and let out a small whimper from his throat hurting. You winced and sat him up a little bit again, sitting practically behind him to hold him upright, and once more holding his full weight since he was too weak to do it himself. You tipped the glass up to his mouth and sighed.
"Just a little bit," you said when he tried to take a larger sip. "You don't want your stomach to get upset again." You let him have another small sip then sighed.
"Well, you've been sleeping, so that's a good thing," you glanced at the clock that read 12:52am and set down the glass. "How're you holding up?"
"Better," he answered quietly as he closed his eyes again and leaned his head against your shoulder since you were still behind him. You raised an eyebrow and looked at his still flushed face as you moved out from behind him and leaned him back against the pillows.
"Leo. Don't lie to me. That won't help anything," you said softly but still harsh enough to make him know you meant business. His eyes opened again and he looked down.
"Not great," he answered again quietly and you gave a sympathetic smile. You quickly grabbed another unused cloth from the side and wet it in the bowl of water, wringing it out and gently wiping off his head, face, and neck again. This time though, he managed to keep his eyes open and watched you do it. He once again leaned slightly into your hand as you washed over his flushed cheeks and you watched his eyes flutter closed slightly before opening again when you moved your hand away.
"You can go to sleep you know," you said as you put down the cloth. He blinked slowly a few times before he turned his head to look fully at you.
"You don't need to do this," he rasped out and you shook your head.
"I know. But I don't like to see any of you guys suffer. If I can do anything to help, I will," you said simply and he smiled softly
"You just being here helps," he said before he started coughing again. You blushed and waited until his breathing settled down to talk.
"Go to sleep, Leo," you placed your hand lightly on his cheek and he leaned into your palm. You stroked your thumb gently over his cheek until his eyes closed and then you took your hand away. Like every time you left, his eyes cracked open and he looked around for you. When he finally realized that you hadn't really left him, he watched you yawn.
"You should sleep too," he whispered. You smiled at him and shrugged.
"I'm okay. Besides, I have a sick patient to take care of right now. Now stop talking or your gonna start coughing again," you smirked and the corners of his mouth turned up into a smile. But it fell quickly and he looked down. "Leo?" You saw his change in mood and asked.
