Your eyes strayed away from your book and towards the conversation that was going on near Donnie's lab door."Yeah, for sure."
"Thanks Donnie. You're a lifesaver," April responded and you saw Donnie visibly blush and rub the back of his neck nervously.
"Y-yeah. No problem April," she waved to him before she left him standing at the lab door. She yelled out a quick goodbye to which only Mikey and Leo responded to from their spots in the kitchen and living room. You were pretty sure Raph was training, and you just pretended to be engrossed in your book to prevent having to look up again.
As soon as she left the lair Donnie's shoulders slumped and he sighed as he wandered over to the couch and sat down. You peeked up again.
"What's up genius?" You asked. He looked at you and sighed again.
"Just once. Just once I wish I could have a normal conversation with her without stuttering or blushing or making a fool of myself." You rolled your eyes from behind your book, but little did you know that Leo caught that small gesture.
"It's not like you can't. Just be a normal person and talk. Stop thinking so much about it," you said. You silently cursed yourself for actually helping nurse his crush on April, but sitting here watching him stumble was just-...painful.
"She's right Don. You're thinking too deeply into it." Leo added from his spot beside you. You nodded.
"Like right now, you're having a perfect conversation with us because you aren't thinking. You're just doing. Same thing goes for April. Don't think about it, just talk to her." You finished. Donnie sat thinking, and you went back to your book, even though you weren't really reading it.
"Because you're so easy to talk to," he said.
"Cause that makes everything so much better," you muttered under your breath.
"You know what? You're right. I don't think about talking with you guys and I never stutter. Thanks Y/n," Donnie smiled before standing up and going back to his lab. The room fell into silence again and you fell into thought, completely forgetting the book in your hands.
A few minutes passed before you were startled out of your thought by someone calling you.
"Y/n." Leo called. You blinked and looked at him, feeling his normally hard blue stare soften.
"Hmm?" You hummed, still partially distracted.
"You've been on the same page for ten minutes," he said with an amused smile. You looked down at your book with a small blush.
"Oh. Yeah, I'm just-... distracted." You replied. The room went quiet until he spoke again.
"Why do you do this to yourself?" Your attention fully shifted to him and you met his stare, feeling your chest tighten.
"Do what?"
"Come on, Y/n. I know you like him. You could be in there, with him and making him see how great you are, yet you're out here and helping him with April problems. Why?" He said. You bit your lip and shifted in your spot on the couch to face him better.
"Honestly Leo, I know I could be in there with him. I know I could be giving him bad advice, or trying to convince him that it'll never happen. But I just can't bring myself to do it," you replied softly. Leo gave you a sympathetic smile.
"You know, I'm sure if you just told him..."
"No. I would rather not." You interrupted him and shrugged. "He's happy pining after her. I'm just the sidekick. I'm just the one who gives advice and eases his fears. That's what I'll always be. But as long as he's happy with going after April, that's all that matters." You finished. Leo stayed quiet for a while, his eyes portraying how many thoughts were running through his head.
His blue eyes met yours once more, the softness of them catching you off guard, and you swore you saw a hint of sadness in them as he spoke again
"But are you happy?" The question surprised you for a moment and you just stared at him, mouth slightly opened but no answer coming out. He held your gaze.
"I-... if he's happy, that's what matters," you said again and Leo's eyes again held more sadness than you had ever seen.
"You deserve happiness too, you know."
"I know. He just deserves it a little bit more."
