Birthday Surprise

Kari huffed as she shut her apartment door and dropped her bag. She rubbed her temples to try and ease the headache that was pounding in her head and making her ears ring. She sighed and went to the kitchen, only to find a note from her mom.

Your father and I both got called in tonight. We won't be back until late tomorrow. I'm so sorry Kari. Your present is in your room. We wish we could be here.

She grinned and slammed the note down, knowing that she now had the house to herself, and that she could leave without her parents asking questions.

She went to her room and changed into a red tank with a wrap over top and jeans before grabbing her bag again and leaving the apartment, going down the the nearest manhole cover. She hadn't told the turtles about her birthday, not wanting to make a big deal about it. She just wanted to spend the night with them and watch a movie or something. Just to hang out and chill with them without the stress of school or her overbearing parents.

On her way there, her phone rang. She looked at the contact to see it was Raph.

"Hey Raph. What's up?" She greeted happily. She heard his deep chuckle on the other end of the line and felt her heart flutter.

"Nothing much. Just wanted to know if you were doing anything tonight?"

"Actually I'm just on my way there right now," she said.

"W-what? Already?" He had a panicked tone to his voice and she raised an eyebrow before slowing down her walk.

"Raph?" She said. She heard him yell at someone before a loud bang sounded out and a yelp of pain.

"Sorry. I've gotta go. I'll see you when you get here," he said quickly and hung up. She frowned at her phone before shrugging and turning down the alley. She used a piece of stray metal to lift the manhole and looked around to make sure no one was following her before climbing down and sliding the cover back. When she dropped down into the sewers and started walking, she thought about why Raph was acting so weird.

She arrived at the lair and frowned when she noticed the entrance was dark. She slowly walked to it and peeked in.

"Hello?"

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!" The lights came on to reveal a half strung banner and balloons haphazardly thrown all over the place. Kari laughed and walked in.

"Whats all this for?" She said. Raph smiled at her.

"It's your birthday. You didn't think we forgot, did you?" He smirked. She laughed.

"I don't know. I don't even remember telling you when my birthday was," she admitted. Raph frowned.

"So little faith," Leo said with an amused smile.

"I called you but I didn't expect you to be coming down so early. We didn't exactly get everything put up," he pointed the the banner that finally fluttered to the ground and Kari smiled.

"You know what? I don't even care. All I really wanted was to come down and hang out; maybe watch a movie," she shrugged. Donnie came over and gave her a hug first.

"Well I think we can do that," he said and she smiled. The others came over and gave her hugs, Raph being last. When he came up to Kari, the others went to the living room to get a movie started. Leo gave her a wink over his shoulder before leaving, causing a blush to spread across her cheeks. Raph grabbed a box off the table and handed it to her after he gave her a hug.

"Happy birthday," he said softly. Kari smiled at him before opening the black box, neatly wrapped in blue paper with a red ribbon.

"Oh my-... Raph," she breathed out when she opened it. It was a single red rose, each petal encased in resin to keep it perfect, the edges of each petal rimmed with gold. She gently brushed her fingers over one of the petals feeling it's cool smoothness. He shuffled anxiously.

"Do you like it?" He asked nervously. She looked at him and closed the box, setting it down on the table and giving him a tight hug.

"I love it. How-... where-..."

"Ah, Leo helped." He admitted. "I wasn't sure what to get and neither was he so he helped me pick it out. It's a shared gift since I'm bad at that type of stuff," he said. Leo came back into the room and gave her a smile.

"He wanted to get you something really special. I just helped pick it out," he shrugged but she saw smile play at his lips. Kari gave him a hug as well and smiled.

"This is so beautiful. Thank you guys. So much," she said and they both shared a smile before Kari gently put the box inside her bag.

"Donnie's got a movie on. You ready?" Leo asked and Kari nodded before the two escorted her to the couch.

Kari sat down and Leo and Raph sat on either side of her. Raph put an arm around her shoulders on the back of the couch and she smiled. About halfway through the movie, Leo nudged her gently with his knee and she looked at him.

"So is this the birthday you wanted?" He asked quietly. She nodded, smiling, and he squeezed her hand gently before watching the movie again.

When all was said and done at 12am, Donnie gave Kari another hug before going to his lab to work, Mikey said happy birthday with a huge grin on his face and went to bed, and Kari was left alone with the one in blue and the one in red.

"I don't know how to thank you guys," she said and they both chuckled.

"Don't worry. You deserve it for all you've done for us," Raph said.

"Yeah, but this was just-... amazing," she sighed happily. Leo yawned and looked at the time.

"Well, I think I'm gonna crash," he smiled at Kari before hugging her again, planting a kiss on the top of her head. "Happy birthday Kari." She blushed and he nodded a goodnight to Raph before disappearing down the hallway.

"So, want me to walk you home?" Raph asked and Kari nodded.

"Sure." The walk home was fairly boring, small talk filling the silence as they wandered over the rooftops; Raph carrying her on his shell most of the way. When they arrived back at her apartment, he set her down gently and she sighed.

"Thanks for walking me home." She said and he nodded.

"Anytime." They fell into a silence before Kari spoke again.

"Raph, thank you so much for the rose. It's so beautiful," she said and he chuckled nervously.

"Ah. It was nothing." He waved it off and Kari smiled.

"Well, it was a bit more than nothing." She came a bit closer to him and stood on her toes to reach his cheek, brushing her lips against his cheek once before slowly backing away and leaving the red clad turtle standing there stunned. He finally snapped out of it and blushed, also backing away slowly.

"Happy birthday, Kari," he whispered before he jumped off her roof and was gone. She fought back a huge smile and crawled in through her window, grabbing the beautiful rose from her bag and looking at it again.

"Best birthday ever."
