“No, Dad,” Kyle answers firmly, indisputably. He then looks at me, his eyes filled with drops of tears and love, “Ali is my life. He’s everything I have. It would be a dream-come-true if you spare me your attention, Dad, but I could never break up with Ali.”
Kyle, I really want to jump and give you my most secure hug if I could right at this very moment. Happiness is an understatement if I can describe my feelings after what Kyle has said. I definitely feel his genuine love towards me on the way he expressed his thoughts and his stares that screams my name.
“Even when I had a pox, he never left me alone. He took care of me, Dad. And like him, I’ll always be by his side,” Kyle adds.
His father’s expression suddenly changes to a worry. “So that explains you scars, Kyle?” his father asks with concern. He is silent for a moment. As if he’s taking time to understand everything.
“I’ve been so blinded with my own thoughts, I ignored your welfare,” his father starts to sob. “I thought giving you every material you need, giving you the perfect life you asked for will make me the best father. I thought I’ve been a good father to you, Kyle, but turns out, I’m the worst. I only wanted what’s best for you. I only wanted to give you the best life. But I believe those were based only on my own perception and I disregard yours. I’m sorry, Kyle,” he lets go of Kyle’s hands, stands and embraces Kyle. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry… I’m sorry I’m not with you when you needed me the most. I’m sorry that I’ve been a bad father. I’m sorry I’m too occupied with work and thinking about your mother, that I forgot the most important part of my life, and that is you, Kyle. I love you, Kyle,” he adds.
“I’m sorry if I have kept this hurting from you, Dad. But you are not a bad father. Not a bit. I know that you always think about me, and I appreciate it so much. I love you too, Dad,” Kyle says in between their hugs.
“I never thought you were hurt all these time, Kyle. I’ve been very ignorant and selfish,” says Kyle’s father.
For a moment, they’ve been feeling each other’s presence and warmth. Kyle’s head is buried in his father’s chest, his father’s right arm is around Kyle’s head then ruffling his hair, the left is around Kyle’s body. Then they let go.
“Ali,” Kyle’s father calls me. He looks at me and then he kneels. Kyle and I are surprised of his gesture, we are trying to make him stand but he persists. “I’m sorry if I have spoken bad things about you. I now know that you are better in loving Kyle more than me. Thank you for taking care of my son, and promise me. Promise me that you will love my son more than anything,” he continues.
My heart grows in fondness like it can literally show a smile or the widest grin it can. I can’t help but to reflect that smile from my heart to my lips as it curved the most beaming smile I could ever make. “I promise, Kyle’s Dad. And when I promise to something, I never break it,” I answer.
He smiles; a glowing smile that his ivory- white teeth show. He wipes the droplets of tears that have been falling from his eyes to his cheeks. “Thank you, Ali. Thank you,” says him as he holds my hand. He then stands up and hugs me, too. His arms wrap around my body reminds me of my father. The warmth of his embrace, the essence of his hugs showing love, and the tightness feels securing. I misses father now. My eyes are starting to become brittle of tears.
He then ends the hug and we take our seats. Positions are still the same where Kyle and his father are next to each other and I’m on a solo seat.
“Dad,” Kyle calls his father. There’s a hint of worry still in his voice. “I have something else to confess,” then Kyle looks at me. First his face shows worry as if asking for permission, then he smiles. With that, I can definitely determine what he’s going to confess. I give him an assuring smile, as I nod, which means that it’s okay if he tells it to his father.
His father is waiting for him to continue. “Ali’s not a human. He’s a fairy.”
For a moment, his father is silent, as if taking the information in and keeps on understanding everything. I am worrying, definitely worrying, because what if he’s not okay with it? After all, our worlds are different. We’re different beings.
“So? It doesn’t matter for the both of you, does it?” Kyle’s father asks.
Kyle and I are stunned as our eyes focus on him. I look at Kyle and he seems in disbelief, but his lips curve a cute smile.
“Kyle? Does it matter to the both of you?” he repeats looking at Kyle, and then looks at me.
Kyle shakes his head and so do I. “It does not matter, Kyle’s Dad.”
“Please, call me Dad, too, Ali,” Kyle’s father, I mean Dad says smiling.
“Then who am I to go against that?” Dad says. “As long as my son is happy, as long as you two are happy and you’re not hurting anyone, then I approve your love to one another.”“Awww, Dad…” Kyle expresses before jumping into his father and hugs him.
“You’re the best father ever.”
“I wish I have been before,” Dad responds.
“Doesn’t matter, too, Dad. I’m very happy of how you are now,” Kyle says.
“Thank you, Dad,” I express. He smiles at me as he nods his head to a slight bow.
“I promised myself to give you the best, to take care of you, and make you happy after your Mom died, Kyle. I guess I was too late in realizing that I was not making you happy all along. This is the least that I could do for you,” says Dad. “And I am very proud that you grew up to be an excellent man, Kyle,” he adds.
Tears are starting to pile up again from both their eyes. I believe this is the most memorable moment of my life, because Kyle and I are officially together and he gets to amend things up with his father. I’m indeed elated, at the same time gloomy because I miss my father.
Kyle’s father orders pizza and a bucket of fried chicken to go with the sinigang we will have for lunch. Silim joins with us on the table. Kyle and his father next to each other, I am in front of Kyle, and Silim next to me. I have never tried a pizza before, so I am quite excited eating it. Well, I’m excited but it seems like I have less appetite. I feel kind of weak, too, but I don’t show it.
We are enjoying the feast in front of us, but Silim seems to be in the same state as me—with less appetite.
“Uhmmm, Dad?” Kyle starts the conversation again. He looks at his father. “Do you mind me asking, who told you about me having a boyfriend? Was it Selena?”
