Prompt: Moonshadow assassins!Enya and Soren. Some wholesome cute fluff, but there's probably more angst than wholesome stuff for this one
Setting: pre-TDP season 1

"Do you have to go on this mission? Can't someone else do it?" Soren asks as Enya is tossing another tunic into her pack. "We just came back from an assassination mission, why are they sending you off?"
"Don't know, but I need to get this one done now." Enya responds as she quickly closes her pack and slings it over her shoulder. "Alright time to go."
"Wait!" She feels Soren's arms grab her from behind and pull her to his chest in a tight hug. "Please...please don't leave just yet." He begs softly as he buried his face into her hair. "Do you have to do this alone? I can go with you if two assassins are required to do the job."
Enya couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt hearing him say that. This was the first mission she was ever going to do without Soren, they'd always been paired together for these. Their first mission together was when they were just fourteen, and she would have died and failed at killing their target if Soren hadn't been there to save her and finish the job. And since then it was difficult to separate them. She was reluctant to bring him along for this one, this target was a Del Barian who purposely crossed into Xadia to kill random and unarmed elves and left their corpses to rot in the sun while they took every valuable trinket the elves had on them, she didn't want to risk Soren getting hurt since he was still recovering from their previous mission.
"I have to, you have to stay here." She finally says as she feels Soren release her and turns to face him, his arms still wrapped around her. "Just stay here, keep watch over the house, at least until I come back?"
"And if you don't?" Soren asks softly. "Enya, you got hurt on our last mission, you need rest."
"I have to do this, those unarmed and innocent elves deserve justice and who am I to deny them?"
Soren lets out a sigh and lowers his head so it's resting against Enya's forehead, unable to look her in the eye. "I just don't want you getting hurt, it's unfair for them to send you after what happened with our last mission. Couldn't they send Runaan instead?"
"Runaan is going off on his mission with some other assassins that's more top priority than what I'm doing." Enya gives him a hopeful smile. "I'm leaving tonight with them, we're headed in the same direction anyways so I won't be alone. I still have to leave my flower in the pond like the others do."
Soren perks up at this and tightly hugs Enya. "Okay. But just promise me that you will come home as soon as it is done, and no accepting any more missions until you recover."
"Alright I promise." Enya laughs before pressing a kiss to his lips and feels Soren smile into the kiss. She didn't want to leave so soon, but she had to. And if all went well, they could relax and not have to worry for any missions for a while. "I love you." Enya murmurs softly as she broke the kiss. "I'll come home, I promise."
"You better, or I'm dragging you back myself." Soren jokes.

But she never came home.
Day after day Soren would come by Runaan and Ethari's home to check the pond to watch the silver water lily with the pale purple jewel attached to his beloved's life-force, hoping it'd remain on the surface. Days would pass and still no sign of her returning. Days turned to a week, and still nothing. But one evening, he finds Ethari kneeling by the side of the pond weeping and unable to speak properly, and once Soren looks into the pond he realizes why.
There is only one water lily floating, and the rest are sunk to the bottom of the pond. The tears would not stop and Soren was very sure he screamed and cried himself hoarse after seeing Enya's lily submerged under the water along with Runnan's and the other assassins. Rayla's was the only one floating on the surface, signifying she was still alive.
Soren wasn't even sure how much time had passed since he saw the flower at the bottom of the pond, but he didn't care. He could barely sleep at night, knowing too well that even if he woke up she wasn't going to be asleep beside him or snuggled against his chest, and he ended up spending those nights wandering aimlessly around the village.
One evening Ethari came to him with something in his hand, something Soren remembered asking him to make a few weeks back before Enya was sent off on that mission.
"I know it's too late to give this to her, but I think you should still have it." The smith says as he hands Soren a small ornate necklace with beautiful silver beads and an amethyst hanging in the center. "I know she would have accepted it, she loved you very much and would have been happy to spend the rest of her life with you."
"I was gonna ask her to marry me when the time was right, I wanted to give her this." Soren murmured as he took the necklace. "Now I...I just can't anymore."
Ethari nods wordlessly before clasping Soren's hands in his. "She's still here with you, she always will be. Just don't ever forget her."
Soren nods before his hands are released, looking down at the necklace. "I don't think I ever can."
