Thursday could not have come fast enough for Sutton, even if it had only been a few days since Professor Lupin had dropped such a bombshell on her and then promised to teach her the Patronus Charm.
Her professor's had begun to crack down much harder as O.W.L. exams crept closer to them, and the fifth years spent more time in the classroom and the library than anywhere else in the castle. Sutton had even noticed that Fred and George had also put the pranking on the backburner for the moment. They had joined the many fifth and seventh year students in the library.
But, she had her lesson with Lupin that night. So, of course, the day seemed to tick by incredibly slowly, especially after her last class of the day when she and Lyra found themselves in the Great Hall, surrounded by rolls of parchment and plates of food as they studied for their Transfiguration quiz coming up the next day.
At least Lyra was studying, and Sutton was half-assing her worksheet as she tapped her foot impatiently and attempted to stop herself from looking at her watch every thirty seconds.
Her mind was faraway, thoughts consumed with how her defence lesson would go later that night, alongside the news article Lyra had hesitantly shown her earlier in the day.
As she jotted down the different ways to identify animagi, Lyra glanced up with narrowed eyes.
"What gives?" Sutton looked at her in confusion, "Don't make that face at me. You've been shifty all day and I know it's not because of the Prophet because you were weird before that. What's wrong?"
Lyra continued to stare Sutton down with suspicious eyes until her friend sighed and dropped her quill onto the table, "Sorry. Uhm, Professor Lupin offered to teach me how to defend myself against the Dementors. I'm just very excited."
"Oh." Lyra blinked before she smiled, "That wasn't what I was expecting at all."
Sutton rose an eyebrow as she grinned, her work forgotten as she leaned forward, "What exactly were you expecting?"
"No idea, but I just knew it wasn't good," Lyra responded. She looked back down at her textbook and flipped through the pages, "You've got me on edge, Ezra."
"Sutton." She groaned, "Besides, my mind has been completely on exams. I've barely had time to think about Quidditch, Lyra. Quidditch."
Lyra smirked faintly, and she coughed to cover her laughter at her friend's dramatics. Quidditch was important to her, but it was Sutton's entire life. It was everything to her and what she wanted to do with her life. The fact that the exams had taken her life to the point where she hadn't been on the pitch except for practice and not just because she could or because she was bored or wanted to try a new play seemed crazy to Lyra.
"Please, darling. You could not play for the rest of the year, and still, you'd be better than the entire team combined next semester." She told Sutton before she paused and then added, "As well as chosen to be captain."
