"Ezra!" A panicked voice was shouting as countless pairs of feet thumped against the floorboards, "Ezra!?"
The toddler, who couldn't remember how long she had been hiding in the closet, glanced up, her heart thudding as she strained to hear the voice shouting.
"Mummy!?"
The sound of footsteps ceased. Ezra pulled the cloak that her godmother had thrown over her off herself. She heard a rush of movement, and the door was pulled open.
Natalia's terrified face came into view, and Ezra didn't waste another second before she launched herself into her mother's embrace, and the woman quickly turned. All Ezra could see was the closet door.
"Mummy!" She cried as Natalia held her tightly, relief flooding her as she felt her daughter's head nuzzle into her neck.
Natalia ran her fingers through the girl's short curls as her eyes trailed over to the disfigured body of who she could only assume was Marlene McKinnon. More tears fell at the thought of what her best friend, the godmother of her child, had gone through.
"She's up here!" The young mother called out in a choked voice.
"Auntie Marley told me to hide." The girl cried as Sirius appeared in the doorway of the room, relief evident on his face when he spied the toddler clinging to Natalia, who was holding her head to her chest as she shielded her from the corner. The relief on Sirius' face morphed into sadness when he saw the body, "She told me to hide and not come out until I saw you or Daddy, no matter what happened!"
Natalia stroked the girl's hair gently as she sent a million waves of gratitude to her friend who was no longer with them, hoping that she felt them somehow.
"You did so well, my love." She whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to her hairline as Sirius crossed the floor and gathered the two into his arms, pressing his lips against Ezra's cheek, "Marley was right to tell you to do that."
"We need to get her out of here." Sirius whispered quickly, urgently, "We gotta get to Bo and 'Dita before they come in and see this, and James is pretty sure he can smell gas."
Natalia sprung quickly into action as she tightened her hold on the toddler into her arms and cradled her face into her chest so she wouldn't see the rest of the bodies they had passed on the way in as they rushed out of the home.
When Sutton finally regained consciousness, her entire body erupted in pain. She groaned in agony as she shifted uncomfortably, bringing her left hand to the back of her head, wincing as she felt the tenderness.
"Ezra, baby." A familiar voice exclaimed rather shakily.
"Mum?" She croaked out as she cracked her eyes open, one after the other, squinting as numerous lights assaulted her vision, and she rolled her head to the side to find her mother, who looked incredibly relieved when their eyes met.
