(So for those who are gonna get confused, this chapter is a flashback to the night you and Levi slept in his bed together. The Office chapter.)
"Hey Levi... How did you come to join the scouts?" You asked quietly as you laid on your back, staring up at the ceiling.
"What?" Levi replied in his usual annoyed tone.
"Well... Don't get me wrong, you're amazing and all but... You'd be the last person I'd take for joining the scouts... Or any branch of the military for that matter. You seem like you'd make an excellent criminal... But that's just my thoughts. Don't take it the wrong way or anything. I'm glad you're a part of the scouts. You are humanities strongest but... Why did you join?" You asked. Noticing Levi tensing a bit. He too was on his back, staring up at the ceiling, unable to sleep.
"Well..." He let out before going silent again, thinking about his answer.
"You'd be correct in thinking the thug life suited me. It did for a long time.... I lived in the underground for the majority of my life. Back then I was this 'force to be reckoned with.' I never liked titles... Much less when they made me out to be the bad guy which, to be fair, I was..." He stated.
"Well... You still are a force to be reckoned with.. Besides.. I think 'humanities strongest' has a nice ring to it." You replied as you turned on your side, facing Levi who was still staring at the ceiling.
"My...... Mother...... She.... She died when I was very young. After that, the man who I believed may have been my father raised me, he taught me how to fight and defend myself. Use my small frame to my advantage." Levi stated as he turned his head to face you.
"You believed? Do you not know if he was your father?" You asked curiously.
"My mother... She had.. A unique way of making money... Well. Unique for the people up here on the surface. Down there, it was a common profession for women." He answered as you looked up at him, catching on to what he meant by "unique way of making money."
"Heh..." You chuckled. "Must be a small world if it's unique for the people up here..." You said. Levi turned to you with a slightly confused yet concerned look on his face.
"My mother. She uh... Was kinda in that same profession. I think.. After she accidentally had me, she didn't do that stuff as often.. By the time I was around five, she stopped completely and started looking for someone she could settle down with. She met this man and they really hit it off. Two years later, when I was seven, they got married. A year after that, my younger sister was born. We lived perfectly normal lives until a few years later, around when I was thirteen? Maybe? Shiganshina fell. Taking the lives of my mother and sister. After that I decided I would join the scouts as soon as I was old enough to. Of course, I wanted to destroy every last titan there was but, that was the dream and goal of a child. I know my limits now. But I'm still trying to inch closer to that long forgotten dream." You informed as dug up your past.
"So the man you lived with... He isn't your father?" Levi asked confused.
"He isn't. But, he still treats me as if I were his. He isn't related to me by blood, I suspect my father could be anyone or he could be dead, but, the one I call father... He cannot be replaced by anyone. I am thankful I have him. We look out for each other." You said. "Maybe we are more alike than we realise." You informed, staring at Levi.
"Maybe.." Was all Levi said as he let out a sigh.
"So... How did you join the scouts then? If you lived underground as a criminal... I don't think they would have willingly let you join." You asked.
"It was Erwin." Levi stated as he turned on his side to face you. "He ambushed me and my two friends. We fought, and I would have won if he hadn't already captured my friends... Anyway. He wanted me to join the scouts seeing as I had a 'unique' way of using the ODM gear. It was either that or he hands us to the military police. So of course, we accepted."
"And what? All your crimes were just.. Forgotten?" You asked.
"Well... Previously, before that day, we had been hired to kill Erwin in exchange for a hefty sum of money and free access to the surface. But it all went to shit. On our first expedition outside the walls... They... Died." Levi stated, emphasising on "They."
"Erwin, somehow, knew our intentions... And once they died... I realised I had nothing to go back to... So I stayed, fought alongside Erwin. He taught me not to regret anything, not my actions or my morals. He turned me into 'humanities strongest', 'humanities greatest hope' he told me I would become a symbol of hope for everyone. And well... here I am..." He said. "Nothing has changed though. I'm still respected out of fear. Just like I was back then."
"Levi... No... Maybe some people respect you out of fear.. But they are just cowards. Have you even heard the things some of the newer and even senior scouts say about you? They sing praises about you all the time. They look up to you and aspire to be just like you. You are the reason so many people are willing to fight the titans. You give us all hope. You are special Levi, you are so important. If you weren't here, we would have given up hope a long time ago." You informed as you shifted closer to him and hugged him. He relaxed in your hold and closed his eyes and he nestled into a comfier position.
"Just like hugging a big stuffed animal." You mumbled as you combed a hand through Levi's hair.
