You come within a kilometre of the walls when you feel Levi gently stirring beneath you. You had been holding him with one arm under his back while your other arm was holding his horse's reins so you could understand that it would be uncomfortable for him.

"I'm sorry, just hang on. We're almost back." You say quietly as he slowly opens his eyes and looks up to you.

"F/N..." He whispers, wincing at the pain. He lets out a very soft chuckle and looks you in the eyes. "Erwin..." He starts.

"You need to rest Levi." You state.

"You... Asked me what... I said to Erwin that night.." He says with a hoarse voice. You look down at him confused, wondering why now of all times he would bring that up.

"I wanted him to... Let you stay... In case something... Happened to you. But... Would you look at that?.." He says through a cough. "Turns out I'm the one who got... Injured. thankfully."

"Thankfully? What do you mean thankfully?" You ask as you pull him close to your body, hugging him.

"I... Don't know what... I'd do... If... I lost you... Are you... Okay?" He says as he closes his eyes once more. You give him a shocked look before hugging him with both your arms, trusting his horse to follow the others.

"You idiot." You say as you hold him close. "I'm fine. I'm worried about you. I... I don't know why but... When I found you on the ground... Unconscious... It felt like I had been stabbed through the heart, my stomach felt empty. So don't you dare ask if I'm okay. If you had died back there... I would have lost it. I can't lose anyone else I care about. Please." You say, practically spewing out all of your emotions.

"F/N, is Levi okay? Is he awake?" Mike asks as he looks back to see you hugging Levi closely. You nod and proceed to ride towards the gate that is now less than five-hundred metres away.

"Check his temperature. Make sure he doesn't have a fever." Hanji informs as you nod and place a palm over Levi's forehead.

"He's a bit warm but I don't think it's anything to worry about." You reply, softly stroking Levi's forehead. "Just hang on okay?" You whisper, only receiving a slight parting of the lips and small turn of his head. "Levi? Levi! Just- Just hang in there okay?!" You yell as you lightly shake him. "Hanji.. Hanji?! There's no titans near the gate! It'll be faster to go through the wall rather than over it! Please!"

"Alright, we'll try alert the stationary guards on top of the wall." Hanji informs as she shoots up a green flare. Moments later the gate starts opening and you all race through, managing to avoid running into the growing crowd of civilians. You cover Levi's face with both your capes, trying to maintain the image of "Humanities strongest soldier" and although that was still true. The fact is, you can't always get out of a battle unscathed.

Immediately, you rush to Erwin's quarters and lay Levi on the commanders bed, having Hanji tend to his injuries.

"He should be okay with some rest, I have tended to him so now it's up to his body to do the rest of the healing. In the meantime, we have to do everything we can to make sure he doesn't get worse." Hanji informs as you and Mike stand idly by the side of the bed.

"Hanji, Mike,.. F/N? What's-" Erwin asks as he enters the room but immediately stops when he notices Levi laid out on his bed. "What happened?" He asks.

"There was a titan ambush-" Mike begins to explain before you cut in.

"I distracted him..." You inform with you head down.

"F/N that isn't true." Hanji states.

"Really? Because from the way I look at it. It's pretty damn clear to me that if I hadn't complained about my horse, he wouldn't be here, like this." You say whilst clenching your fists in frustration.

"Is he okay?" Erwin asks with a concerned tone.

"For now. After a day or two we should be able to determine if he is getting better or worse." Hanji informs as she stands up. "Don't beat yourself up over this F/N. Levi is strong, he will get through this." She says before she leaves the commander's quarters.

"Welp, I should get back to my squad." Mike states as he pats you on the shoulder and leaves.

"Jean..." You mutter.

"Huh?" The boy replies.

"If you tell anyone about what happened to Levi, I'll cut out your tongue and feed it to the pigs." You inform with a stern voice. "No one can know about this incident." Jean gives a slow nod before exiting the room.

"F/N, you can go if you want. I'll see to it that Levi is not disturbed." Erwin informs but you do not leave. You sit next to Levi and gently place your hand over his. Erwin lets out a sigh and takes a seat on the opposite side of the bed.

"It is good to see that someone is looking out for him." He states. "He's practically been alone since he joined the scouts."

"He's not alone... He has you." You reply quietly as you rub your thumb over Levi's hand.

"He has to follow my orders L/N. As much as I trust him, there is no real friendship here." Erwin informs.

"You're wrong. He trusts you to a fault. He is loyal to you yes but he is always trying to please you and make the right decisions. He wants your recognition and appreciation. How you don't see this, I truly don't understand. You should really stop for a moment, I mean really stop, and spend some time with Levi. Try and make a real friendship instead of a work-based trust. He only has you, Hanji, Mike and, apparently, me." You state as you stand up.

"Where are you going?" Erwin asks.

"I need to get some air... And I need to punch something." You answer as you walk to the door.

"L/N, thank you for bringing him back safely. Your actions will not go unnoticed." Erwin states as he nods you a goodbye.
