Close as strangers

3:15 am. You sighed in frustration at your inability to get to sleep. You'd been trying for almost two hours now but still no look. You were wide awake. Turning over to try and get comfortable in your massive bed, a faint noise started coming from your laptop. You reached down to grab it off the floor. As you opened it a picture popped up on the screen. Oh, a Skype call. A picture of your boyfriend, Ashton was showing. Quickly, you clicked accept and waited for it to connect. Suddenly the curly headed boy appeared on your screen. He looked up and met you with a wide grin, which you half-heartedly returned. Ashton had been on tour for six months with the band, meaning that's how long you hadn't seen him for. Obviously you missed him like crazy.
"Hey Y/N" He smiled softly.
"Hi ash" you whispered.
"I didn't expect you to answer, isn't it like 2am over there for you?" He asked.
"Uh it's like past 3am" you laughed slightly.
"Why aren't you sleeping?" Concern evident in his voice.
"Can't" you replied.
"Oh. I thought you'd have no trouble sleeping since you have a nice big double bed to yourself without me hogging the covers" Ashton giggled.
"Yeah" you sighed, turning away from the camera. You wiped a tear that had rolled down your cheek. Honestly, you couldn't stop thinking about Ashton. You two were surviving off late night calls and texts, thanks to time zones, and that was it. No cuddles, no movie nights, no goofing around. Nothing. And it sucked. More tears started to escape as you thought about how much you missed him. You tried to hide your crying but it was no use, Ashton had already noticed.
"Baby girl" he whispered. "Look at me please"
You slowly turned towards the camera. Worry and sadness was plastered on his face which just broke your heart even more.
"I'm so sorry" he said.
"For what Ashton?" You asked, confused.
"For leaving you"
"Ashton your dream is coming true. Don't be sorry" you smiled slightly. You genuinely were happy for him and so proud of him but you couldn't stop missing him.
"I'm not with you though. I shouldn't have left you. I miss you all the damn time. It just gets harder and harder every day. I thought maybe it would get a little easier as the tour went on but god was I wrong. I need you Y/N. I'm so so sorry baby" Ashton said. He buried his face in his hands and you saw him start to shake. You had endless tears streaming down your face and hearing Ashton cry made you feel sick. You'd never seen him so upset before.
"Please don't cry. I know this is hard but we'll get through it ash. I promise" You told him.
"I should be the one saying that to you. But I'm a wreck. I-I just can't cope. I'm not e-even happy anymore. I-I'm not happy without you."
"I'm not happy either. I miss you so much and it kills me everyday not being able to see you but this is what we have. And I'm not giving up Ashton. We can't give up on us." You said, the last part barely audible thanks to the tears that wouldn't quit falling down your face.
"I don't plan on giving up. I love you too much to let you slip through my fingertips because of stupid timezones pulling us apart. I'm not doing that. I love you so much baby girl. This won't be the end of us, no matter how difficult it is." Ash told you.
"I love you too. I really love you. God I miss you"
"I know. I miss you too." He said again.
"Everyday I feel like we keep getting further apart. Like I'm just losing a part of you everyday." The tears still didn't stop even when you talked.
"Y/N don't say that. You're not losing me, okay? I'm still here. I always will be. Just, please hold on. I can't let you go." He said, getting chocked up again.
"I will. It's me and you or nothing at all. We're like a super team." You smiled.
"Like mermaid man and barnacle boy from SpongeBob?" He asked, a genuine smile on his face.
"Exactly. Although I don't like the thought of being really old" you giggled. His whole mood lifted as soon as you laughed. This was the ash that you knew and loved.
"Who's mermaid man and who's barnacle boy?" ash questioned. What a weird topic you were on.
"You're definitely Mermaid man. Always falling asleep and forgetting everything" You grinned cheekily. Ashton shook his head and laughed.
"God I love you"
"I love you too"
"You should sleep babe" he sighed
"Probably" you yawned.
"Ash?"
"Yeah?"
"Will you sing me to sleep?" You asked him.
"Of course" he smiled. You got in a comfortable position and placed your laptop on the pillow next to you. Ashton blew a kiss to you and began to sing. You soon fell asleep to the sound of his voice. Little did you know, as he sang, he had already begun making his way to the airport, catching the next flight home to you. Tomorrow he would be back. Finally.
