I understand what it means to be a fool.
"My, what a humble girl, aren't you?"
Intoxicating praise fumed around her in a sweet, saccharine scent, filling her mind and lungs with the aftertaste of validation. Craning her head, eyes wide and soft around the edges, she uncurled her fingers from the hem of her white tunic, her frame swallowed by the pristine fabric.
"This pitiful world is unworthy of your humbleness, little dream."
A tall, obscured silhouette in front of her knelt to match her level, reaching to hold her small ones into the rough patches of skin. Its thumb traced over her knuckles, slow and deliberate, gliding across the surface as though memorizing every contour of her slender fingers. It moved higher, inch by inch, until its touch crept along her arm.
"We'll fix that."
A whisper of its promise, consuming every thought with its plague and darkness.
I understand what it means to be "perfect."
"Chin up, back straight, and eyes forward."
A finger rest beneath her jaw slid over the jawline up to the very cheek in a fleeting brush. She shuddered at the touch, her brows furrowed, but the person in front of her clicked their tongue over the roof of their mouth in distaste, almost disapproving of the folds marring her forehead.
"Is that any way for you to behave? How insolent."
She swallowed the words inside of her mouth, biting her tongue in between her teeth to prevent herself from being opinionated. Rather, she let her lips curve at the corner, uplifted into a faint smile, straining at the edges. But what mattered was the pleased expression flashing across its face, resting there with ease compared to hers.
