“Five, six, seven, eight.” Gandalf counted as we all ran down the hill towards safety. “Bifur. Bofur. That’s ten. Bombur and Kili, that’s twelve. Fili and…” He paused before he said my name. “Torien, your father isn’t very happy with your decision.” He mumbled as I passed him.
“Yes but it was mine to make.” I replied. I caught Gandalf rolling his eyes for a moment.
“Where’s Bilbo?” He questioned. “Where is our hobbit?”
“Curse the Halfling.” Dwalin muttered annoyed. “Now he’s lost.”
“I thought he was with Dori.” Gloin muttered.
“Don’t blame me.” Dori shot back.
“When did you last see him?” Gandalf questioned.
“I think I saw him slip away when they first cornered us.” Nori proclaimed.
“What happened, exactly?” Gandalf demanded. “Tell me.”
“I’ll tell you what happened.” Thorin said stepping forward. “Master Baggins saw his chance and he took it. He has thought of nothing but his soft bed and warm hearth since first he stepped out of his door. We will not be seeing our hobbit again, he is long gone.” I looked down at this comment. Many dwarves shared silent glances.

“No, he isn’t.” Said a voice from behind us. We all turned to find Bilbo standing there slightly out of breath.
“Bilbo Baggins.” Gandalf chuckled. “I have never been so glad to see anyone in my life.”
“Bilbo.” Kili grinned. “We’d given up on you. How on earth did you get past the goblins?” He asked.
“How indeed?” Thorin added.
“Well, why does it matter? He’s back.” Gandalf pipped in.
“It matters, I want to know.” Thorin insisted. “Why did you come back?”
“Look, I know you doubt me. I know you always have.” Bilbo explained. “And you’re right. I often think of Bag-end. I miss my books. And my arm chair and my garden. See that’s where I belong, that’s home. And that’s why I came back. Because…

You don’t have one. A home. It was taken from you. But I will help you take it back if I can.” We all shared a moment of silence. I shared Bilbo’s reason. But I also became part of this company to honour the memory of Darwin. Howling started from the hill above and we all turned to look as a pack of Wargs ran down the hill towards us.

“Out of the frying pan.” Thorin stated.
“And into the fire.” I finished.
