As Everything Changes

Chapter 38

"I'll see you at six thirty!" John calls as I enter the dance studio. It is Wednesday, the day of Jacob's party. To say I am kind of nervous is the absolute truth. I mean, it's not like we had an easy break-up.

"See you!" I wave then go inside.

"Hurry up Selena! We have tons of work to do! The competition is arriving much sooner than I expected and we all have practice tomorrow and Friday," Ms. Lilian says frantically.

"Yes ma'am," I nod then go into the dressing room to change.

Tessa and Alexa are already inside changing.

"So Sel, I heard you're going to Jakie's party tonight," Alexa says, her voice venomous.

"Uh yeah. He is my friend. What does it matter to you?" I shoot back.

"You aren't cheating on your precious boyfriend, right?" she asks.

"He is actually going with me. He is friends with Jake as well. I heard that you aren't going. Is it because Jake doesn't want you there?"

"Of course he wants me there, I am his girlfriend," she winks.

"All you are is delusional. He personally told me that you broke up and he hates you. Get over yourself," I roll my eyes.

"We didn't break up! We are just having time away from each other. He loves me more than he ever loved you."

"I feel as if I am arguing with a two year old. Good luck with that," I say. I then throw the clothes that I just changed out of into my bag and walk out. Tessa follows behind in a hurry.

"She is seriously insane," Tessa mutters.

"Oh yeah. So how do you think the dance is coming along?"

"I love it. I think it would work just fine as a duet," she winks.

"I wish!" I say back.

The door swings open behind us and Alexa struts out.

"Are you ladies ready to dance yet? Why did you take so long today?" Ms. Lilian asks when she enters the studio from her office.

"Uh I couldn't find my Spandex and they were helping me look," I lied quickly.

Ms. Lilian narrows her eyes at me but doesn't say anything.

"Okay! Well I want this dance near perfection by the time you guys leave," she says.

Three of us nod and we begin to stretch. Moments later we run through the dance. Over and over and over and over again.

"Pull it together! Alexa! If your leg is not straight what is the point of having it up? I want it perfect! Selena, you cannot turn your foot out on that aerial! And Tessa, when you do your pirouette, your back should be straight! How hard is it ladies? Run through it again!" Ms. Lilian orders.

We get in our places quickly. I make sure to keep my foot in during my aerial and I guess the other two fixed their mistakes because by the end of the dance Ms. Lilian has a triumphant smile lingering on her lips.

"That was absolutely beautiful! I want you to run through it one final time then you may leave as long as there are no silly mistakes!"

We do the dance one last time and from what I can tell, it looks good.

"Good work today. Have a good afternoon!" Ms. Lilian says.

"Goodbye Ms. Lilian!" I call.

"Have fun sweetie!"

I then leave for my house. I have about an hour to get ready since dance ran so late. I wish I could just take a nap. Maybe in the car.

"Mom! Dad! I'm home!" I call.
