• shawn •I was pacing back and forth on the pavement at one forty-five in the morning, chewing on my fingernails anxiously.
Madison was sitting on the bench with her leg bouncing up and down, her hair a mess and her eyes bloodshot. I wondered why she suddenly cared so much about Andrea when she never did before.
Teala was sitting on the grass with Nash, both of them having a quiet conversation but anyone could tell none of us were able to function properly.
All four of us were filled with worry. Their dad made us stay here while he went with the police. A lot was going on but nothing was happening here with the four of us. It was killing me just sitting here, the time going by slower than ever.
My pacing came to an abrupt stop when Madison came up to me, putting her hand on my shoulder. "Hey," she said.
"Hey." I breathed.
"I know that you probably think I'm a bitch..." she starts and I let out a chuckle. She smiles sadly and continues on, "but I really do care about Andrea."
"Have you always cared about her, or are you just now starting to since she's..."
"Gone?"
"She's not gone." I say quietly, mostly trying to convince myself. I look at Madison and wait for her to answer my question.
"Deep down, I've always cared about her. But now that she's... missing, I'm now starting to realize how important she is to all of us, and I know that's really screwed up, but I just hope she's okay."
"You know, you really made Andrea feel worthless." I say truthfully which causes Madison to frown. "She's out there somewhere probably still thinking her family doesn't care about her. That's a horrible thought to have weighed down on you every day... When your family is the one making you feel like nothing, I can't imagine how hurtful that must feel."
"God, I can't imagine how much worse this situation could be if Andrea didn't have you." Madison shakes her head to herself and I pull my eyebrows together.
"What do you mean?"
"If it weren't for you, we wouldn't have even known she was gone... If it wasn't for you, we would probably never have known what Andrea's real smile looked like. And if it wasn't for you, who knows where'd she be right now..."
"If it wasn't for me we wouldn't be in this situation at all." I say sadly.
"Are you seriously blaming yourself right now?" Teala comes up and asks from behind me. I look at her and shrug. These two girls definitely have a heart... who would have thought?
"Guys, Dad's calling." Nash says, quickly standing up from his spot on the ground. We all gather around him as he puts it on speaker phone.
"Dad? Where's Andrea?" Nash answers.
"Is she okay?" I ask, my tone filled with worry.
"Where are you?" Madison adds.
"Did you find her?" Teala asks right after. The four of us were nervously waiting for his response.
There's a moment of silence on the other end, the only thing audible is steady breathing and we all exchange glances.
"Dad?!" Nash asks impatiently.
"We found her." he finally says from the other end, but his tone doesn't lift the weight off my chest. The other three let out a sigh of relief, but I can sense something is wrong.
"What now? Where are you guys?" Madison asks the phone.
"She doesn't want to come home." he says.
