"Can I go outside and play?" Anna asks from beside me. We were staring out the window in the living room together, watching the snowflakes fall in one big blur outside.
"It's freezing out there," I tell her. "You're gonna have to bundle up real good."
"I will." she promises with a big smile. It was Monday and school got cancelled due to the freezing weather and all the snow we were getting.
I had a special way of finding out we had a snow day this morning. I was still in bed and it was around five in the morning, an hour before my alarm would be going off.
I was woken up from my slumber by Nash's loud voice. He had yelled "EVERYONE WE HAVE A SNOW DAY. PLEASE TURN OFF ALL ALARMS AND DON'T WAKE ME UP BEFORE NOON."
His loud shouting scared the crap out of me at first, but I relaxed when I realized we had no school and I shut off my alarms.
I helped my little sister get bundled up into snow pants, boots, her winter coat, a scarf, hat, mittens, and ear muffs. When I was done I giggled because she had so much on she could barely move.
I sat at the table so I could keep an eye on Anna in the backyard. I read Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta for the second time, drinking out of my cup of coffee every now and then. I was cozy, as Shawn would say. I glanced up every few minutes to see what Anna was doing, not wanting her to get kidnapped or anything since she was all alone out there. It was upsetting for her not to have any siblings around her age to play with.
It was after about twenty minutes when she came trudging in the house. "It's too cold out there." she pouts, her cheeks rosy from the cold.
I help her out of all her snow stuff, cleaning up the mess afterwards. Anna leaves to go in the living room with Hayes and I go to answer the door that there was just a knock on. I pull open the door; it tends to get stuck a lot during the winter.
"Oh, hey Bella." I force myself to smile at the blonde girl standing outside. "Cameron isn't here."
"I know." she smiles at me, stepping inside and I close the door after her. "He told me to come over here and check on you guys because he's sick." she says in an annoyed tone.
"We're fine." I tell her, going to open the door so she can leave.
"Trying to get rid of me?" she laughs, taking off her coat and shoes. Ugh, she is planning on staying. "I was gonna come make lunch for you guys."
"I was going to make soup but okay."
"Just sit down and read your book or whatever it is that you do." she gives me another Bella smile. By Bella smile, I mean literally a Bella smile. She has this weird smile that seems sweet but a smart person like me can sense something behind it. I haven't quite figured out what it is that I see behind that pretty smile of hers, but it was killing me trying to find out.
"Bella!" Teala grins excitedly when she comes down the stairs. Madison follows soon after and the three of them walk into the kitchen together, talking and laughing. I don't know why I feel left out, it's not like I want to hangout with them or be a part of their girly bond.
My phone rings once I get into my room and I smile seeing Shawn's contact. I bring the phone up to my ear and say "Hey Shawn."
"Hey," he says happily. "You're so lucky your school had a snow day. My school is freaking stubborn and never cancels school unless we are in a near death situation. I'm at lunch now though so I decided to call you. What's up?"
"Um, nothing really. I've been taking care of everything today but then Bella showed up and took over."
He doesn't say anything at first, but then he speaks up. "It really sucks that she is kind of a part of your life. I wanted to be done with her forever."
"You can be," I tell him. "It's not like you have to see her."
"Yeah but if she is part of your life, she is part of mine." he sighs.
"How so?" I question him, falling onto my bed.
"You see her a lot, and I see you a lot. What if one day I come to your house and she shows up unexpectedly?" I can hear the sadness in his voice, and I wondered if he still wasn't over Bella.
It worried me sometimes. I was paranoid about that whole thing... I didn't trust Bella. I had this feeling that if she told Shawn she wanted him back he would go back to her in a heartbeat. Even though there was a time when she wanted to get back together and it didn't happen, I still worry about it. It's the more afraid, insecure part of me that thinks Shawn is going to leave me.
"I don't know, we'll cross that bridge when we get there." I assure him. "Sound good?"
"Yeah, thanks babe. I'm gonna go because I'm starving, but I'll talk to you later."
"Okay. Have fun at school."
"I won't." he says with a laugh before hanging up. I smile, remembering the time he told me to have a good day in the pharmacy before I really knew him, and I replied with those same words. "I won't."
