The only thing more awkward than dinner las night is breakfast this morning. Tobias doesn't even bother eating, he just glares daggers at me throughout the meal. Caleb sits next to me, glancing at me sympathetically as he devours his pancakes. My parents sip their coffee as they scroll on their phones.
The sunlight glints off my fork as I push my mutilated pancakes around my plate, avoiding Tobias's harsh gaze. My parents thought it would be a good idea to have a nice breakfast, at seven in the morning, before school. I'm still not to fond of Tobias being at school but I'd suggested it he would've blown up at me.
I push my plate away, almost knocking my glass of milk over, as I glance at the clock.
" Let's go" I prompt.
" I'll walk" Tobias mutters, trying to walk away.
"No" I put my arm out to stop him "ride with Caleb if you must but you are not walking"
With a huff, he walks out to Caleb's car, leaning on the hood of the vehicle. Caleb casts a fleeting glance at me before clicking the button to unlock the car. The moment the doors click, Tobias jumps in the car, slamming the door with a vengeance.
" Keep an eye on him, will you" I mutter to Caleb." I doubt he'd appreciate me tailing him all day"
" Got it" Caleb confirms before ushering me to my car. I jump in and start the car as I clip my sleek grey seatbelt into place.
Within ten minutes I'm pulling into the parking lot and, having lost Caleb on the way, I have a bit to brief my friends. Everyone stands in a huddle near Zekes car, talking animatedly. Conversations sputter and stop as I appear.
" Hey" I greet. " Have any of you explained yet?"
"Nope" Zeke, Uriah and Christina say in unison.
" Okay short version; My parents made some treats, Four and I broke up and he has an opportunity to move to Montana with some relatives" I spout off. Everyone but the three who know gasp and look sadly at me. " Yeah, hey Zeke, talk for a sec" I drag him away from the others without waiting for a response.
" I told you my dads working for Marcus, right?" I check, continuing after he nods " He's coming over for dinner and-"
"Got it. I'll get Four to come to mine" Zeke cuts me off. I wrap my arms around him in a friendly hug that engulfs me in warmth. An engine cuts abruptly to a stop on our right, making everyone's heads snap that way. Caleb and Tobias emerge from Caleb's Mustang, both looking slightly annoyed.
Tobias makes a big deal of changing his path to avoid me, making sure to look at me before turning.
"He's such a drama queen" I mutter
"Caleb, could you follow-""Nope, sorry sis he bugs me" Caleb says, stalking off. I cast an angry glare at his back.
"I'll keep an eye on him" Zeke assures me before running to Tobias. Tobias doesn't even turn his head before continuing into the school.
I sigh and trudge in the same direction as them, my eyes scanning the earth below me.
###
The day passes by as usual, except for the fact that Tobias is blatantly ignoring me. This proved to be problematic since were partners in several classes. Lunch came quickly, calling a mass of students into the crowded hallways. Tobias walks diagonally from me, a few people between us. He's close enough that I can see him wince when an elbow is jabbed into his back.
Sighing, I shove my way through the crowds towards Tobias. I wrap a hand tight around his wrist, pulling him through the crowd. He jerks his wrist to get it out of my grip but is unsuccessful. I pull him into a spare room, locking the door behind me. He opens his mouth to protest but I cut him off.
