I'm in shock. First, by the hug from my sister that I had a feeling wouldn't be back. Then, by the appearance of Daryl. Apparently, he and his brother saved Rick's life.
"I brought him back. He really does love you, Lil," she says in my ear before pulling away.
The both of us stand awkwardly, looking at each other. Finally, he steps forward, pulling me into an embrace. "I'm sorry."
"You should be." I'm not sure if I've forgiven him, but in this world, I'm not sure if we really have the luxury to be holding grudges.
Rick places Merle into one of the cells. I don't trust him in the slightest. Milly gives him food through the bars as if she's responsible for him. I never have been able to figure her out since the world went to shit.
We hold a meeting the next morning to decide on what to do.
"Rick says we aren't running," Glenn announces to the entire group.
"No, better to live like rats," the unhelpful Dixon speaks up.
"You got a better idea?" Rick asks in a sardonic tone.
"Yeah, we should've slid out of here last night and lived to fight another day, but we lost that window, didn't we? I'm sure he's got scouts on every road out of this place by now."
Daryl pipes up from the balcony. "We ain't scared of that prick." There seemed to be hostility between the brothers and I wonder what exactly happened in that forest.
"Well, ya should be. That truck through the fence thing, that's just him ringing the doorbell. We might have some thick walls to hide behind, but he's got the guns and the numbers. If he takes the high ground around this place, shoot, he could just starve us out if he wanted to."
"Since when did we include you?" I ask, not completely disregarding his ominous words.
"Let's put him in the other cell block," Maggie adds.
"No, he's got a point," Daryl defends.
Hershel starts in about leaving again. "I said we should leave. Now Axel's dead. We can't just sit here." Rick stares at him for a moment before heading towards the door. Angrily, the older man stands up. "You get back here! You're slipping, Rick. We've all seen it. We all understand why but now is not the time. You once said that this isn't a Democracy. Now you have to own up to that. I put my family's life in your hands. So get your head clear and do something."
Without a backward glance, Rick leaves the room. Hershel sighs in frustration.
He turns to me. "Can't you do something? Anything? To try and fix the situation that we are in?"
My hands run through my hair in frustration. "What do you want me to do, Hershel? It's not a simple fix. We're left with pretty shit options. I've never been an optimist to even begin with. Seriously, don't bother me for a few hours." I storm out of the cells, going outside to the only place not overrun with Walkers. Footsteps echo as they get closer.
