"Ah shit!" Daryl curses, slamming his hands on the steering wheel. There's smoke leaking from underneath the hood of the truck.
"Maybe it's just a radiator hose?" I quip, getting out of the vehicle.
"Just? Where are we going to find another one?!" He kicks at the tire, pacing back and forth in anger.
"Look around, Dare Bear, you have your pick of the litter." I wave my hands around dramatically, gesturing to the highway full of cars.
He grunts, wiping his hand down his face. "We are out of gas, too."
"Then siphon." I grab the gas bucket and hose, going to a nearby car. It takes a few tries but gas flows into the can, though my mouth tastes a bit like fuel now.
"Shit!" Daryl curses, kicking at the pickup again. "The engine is blown. We gotta take the chopper out and go that way."
He lets Rick know the verdict, loading our gear into the remaining cars. Then, I get to ride in the bitch seat. For the first few miles, I attempt to hold on as little as possible but after a close call with the pavement and a Walker, my arms are wrapped securely around his torso.
We settle in front of the RV. Daryl seems to be joyriding but I feel free myself, the wind rushing through my blonde hair. If you tune out the growls, this could feel like a family trip.
Further along the highway, the more and more the road becomes blocked. We go from enjoying the ride to spotting for Dale. Eventually, we stop. There's a way through but we'll have to go slow. My grip around Daryl tightens involuntarily.
There's a loud clank behind us, similar to what the truck made earlier and I know another hose just blew. "Shit Daryl, look!" There's smoke coming out of the hood of the RV; the vehicle coming to a stop.
Daryl is already going to the cars to root around for supplies or maybe a radiator hose. The others disperse with the same idea. I look around for my family and see Marie trying to coax Milly out of the car without any luck. Ashley looks nervously around until she spots me, getting out of the car and running to me for a hug.
"Aunt Lilly!"
I wrap my arms around her. "Hey Ash. How 'bout you stick with Daryl and I?" I hear a grunt but no further indication that it isn't okay.
We fall into a groove together, him busting open the gas tank covers and I doing the actual siphoning. Meanwhile, Ashley would check the cars for anything useful. Marie joined us after a bit without Milly and I didn't care to ask her whereabouts.
"Get under the cars!" Daryl shouts at me, shoving me onto the pavement, skinning my hands and probably my knees. From his tone, I don't argue, getting underneath a nearby vehicle, seeing Marie and Ashley do the same together. I can't see Daryl, though. Unfortunately, I can't focus on it much more as Walkers start to saunter by, occupying every space of my mind.
