*set in late May
Cora's POV:"Hey, babe?" I ask, looking up from my spot on the other end of the bed. Damian diverts his attention away from the book he was reading.
"Yes, beloved?" He prompts.
"Your birthday should be coming up soon, right?" I question. Something strained passes over his face.
"I never told you my birthday." He states instead of answering. I raise my eyebrow.
"I know. But it's been almost a year since we've met. Not once have I heard even a whisper of your birthday. So if it hasn't come up yet then it's coming up soon, right?" I reason. His gaze flickers.
"No one in this house knows my birthday. I haven't told anyone." He says casually, although anyone could see he's skeptical.
"But, you all went above and beyond for my birthday. How can you not tell anyone about yours? And how does literally no one know regardless?" I ask rapidly, sitting up to face him.
"Father can guess the general time period, but because of the way I was conceived there's no way for him to know the actual date of my birth. If he doesn't know then why would I tell anyone else? It's not a big deal." He defends.
It takes me a second to realize what he's talking about. It seems that movie Charlotte picked for my birthday was fairly accurate after all.
"But, you know what day it is?" I question. He nods slowly, as if debating if he should.
"Can I know what it is?" I plead. He makes a face of indecision. This is obviously a hard battle for him.
"August 9th." He states, mustering up dignity into his very bones. It's a valiant effort. I grin like a madwoman, before I make a realization that makes my face fall.
"We missed your birthday. By a lot." I say, something heavy starting to sit on my chest.
"You didn't know and you couldn't have known. I had everything I needed anyways." He shrugs, not even sitting up to face me.
"I know, and I already kinda gave you a gift but we should still celebrate. Just a little? Please?" I beg. He hesitates for a long moment.
"Alright." He concedes. "What did you have in mind?" I grin at him, the weight lifting a little.
"Whatever you wanna do. I'm not expecting you to throw a party or anything if you don't want to." I say. If he hasn't told anyone but me, then he probably has his reasons.
I know I was caught off guard by my own birthday celebration, so I'd like to make his a little easier to swallow. He gives me a lopsided grin, which could be seen as a smirk.
"I wish for affection and perhaps after we can go on a walk with Titus?" He offers. A wide grin splits my face, and I relent.
"Sounds wonderful." I waddle over to his side of the bed on my knees before stumbling onto him. He let's out a small symphony of chuckles.
"I said affection, not mauling." He titters out. I grin happily up at him.
"In that case, can I hold you this time?" I ask. He gives me an odd look.
"Are you not doing that right now?" He questions, gesturing to my arms draped over his frame. I shake my head.
"No, like, hmm, here." I push myself up, taking his book with me. I set it on the nightstand and I lay back down on my side. I tilt backwards just a little and I open my arms to him.
Damian gives me another odd look. He looks a little lost, and remains stationary. I drop my head so it lays on the pillow and my smile grows warmer.
