"Derek"

"Hmmmmm"

"I have something to tell you" He looked up from the screen and set his pen down.

"What" I sat on the edge of the bed and pulled out a cute set of baby clothes and placed them in front of me and then looked at him with a smile.

"Who's having a baby?" he asked with curiosity dripping from his face. So, I turned the shirt around which had ours printed on the back. There was a sudden shock on his face but was soon taken over by contentment "we are having a baby" he screamed and then he got off the bed and picked me up and spun me around.

"We are having a baby" he sung and then kissed me passionately.

"Yes, yes we are"

"This means we are going to have to get married in two weeks, I will plan everything you just pick your wedding dress"

"What, Nooo!" I looked at him straight in the eye to emphasize my point as continued "I also want to be involved"

"Okay, fine you can sort the bakery stuff and flowers leave the rest to me, I don't want you to strain yourself."

"Okay"

For when she is six years old

Dear little one

So, I finally told your dad about you, he seems super happy, and he cannot wait to meet you in person. I know you probably forgot about me or maybe daddy doesn't talk about me enough but just in case, I just want to tell you I love you; I tried my best to stay here but I guess God loved me the most. I hope you are a good girl that learnt all of her alphabets and counting. If you did not, I will not send any gifts down for Christmas for you. I am sure you are loving all the barbie cartoons on tv, when I was growing up my two favorite cartoons were 'The little mermaid' and 'The princess and the pauper' I don't want you to grow up not knowing the true ending of those cartoons you watch. It's very important to know that sometimes no matter how much you try, how much you wish but if something is not meant to go your way it just would not and not all things have a happy ending.

I might never ever get ever get to tell you a story in person but let me take the opportunity to write you a story...well tell you the true story to 'The little mermaid'

Far out in the ocean, the water is as blue as the petals of the loveliest cornflower and as clear as the purest glass. But it is very deep too. It goes down deeper than any anchor rope will ever go, and many, many steeples would have to be stacked one on top of the other to reach from the bottom to the surface of the sea. It is down there that the sea folk live...

Now don't suppose that there are only bare white sands at the bottom of the sea. No indeed! The most marvelous trees and flowers grow down there, with such pliant stalks and leaves that the least stir in the water makes them move about as though they were alive. All sorts of fish, large and small, dart among the branches, just as birds' zoom through the trees up here. From the deepest spot rises the palace of the sea king. Its walls are made of coral and its roof is made of mussel shells that open and shut with the tide.

The sea king had been a widower for years and his old mother kept the house for him. she was a clever woman, but proud of her noble birth, therefore she flaunted 12 oysters on her tail when everyone had only 6. She was extremely fond of her granddaughters, the little sea princesses. They were six lovely girls, but the youngest was the most beautiful of all. Her skin was as soft and tender as a rose petal, and her eyes were as blue as the deep sea, but like all the others she had no feet, her body ended in a fishtail.

Each princess had her small garden plot, where she could dig and plant whatever she liked. One of them made her little flower bed in the shape of the whale, another one thought it would be neater to shape her into a mermaid, but the youngest made hers as round as the sun and there she grew only flowers which were as red as the sun. when her sister decorated their gardens with sunken ships, she would allow nothing in hers except the deep red flowers and the pretty marble statue. This figure of a handsome boy carved in pure white marble had sunk to the bottom of the sea from some shipwreck.

Nothing gave the youngest princess such pleasure to hear about the world of human beings above them.

"When you get to be 15," her grandmother said "You will be allowed to rise out of the ocean and sit on the rocks in the moonlight to watch great ships sailing by. You will see woods and towns too"

At last, she too came to be 15.

The sun had just gone down when her head rose above the surface, but the clouds still shone like gold and honey. A giant three-master lay in view with only one of all its sails set. The little mermaid swam right up to the window of the main cabin, and she would peep in through the clear glass panes. The most handsome of them all was a young prince. It was his birthday too. Suddenly the ship creaked and labored, thick ambers gave way under the heavy blows, waves broke over the ship, the mainmast snapped in two like a reed, the ship over on its side and the water burst into the hold. The mermaid tried to avoid the beams and wreckage tossed about by the sea, one moment it would be black as pitch, and she could not see a thing.
