"Wake up miss you're going to be late," Mariana says gently in her heavy Spanish accent.I spin and cover my head with the blankets. "Cinco Minutos mas por favor Mari," I say while she draws the curtains open. I always liked Mariana, and I'd become very close to her. I invited her to lunch her first week working for me and even though she refused at first, I hated having to eat expensive dinners in front of her. I took several Spanish classes to communicate with her better; I wanted to, she had been so kind. Once I began to understand more Spanish, we'd talk, about her mostly as I never know what to say, she told me about her journey here to the US as she escaped El Salvador in the midst of a war, and although I imagine it wasn't a good time she never speaks on it bitterly, in fact, she tells her stories humorously.
I uncover my head from the blankets as I hear her begin to walk again, "Your mother called, she sent over a dress for today, I put it in the closet," she says as she walks out and closes the door.
Reluctantly, I get up and get ready. After my shower, I stand and stare at the green Versace dress for a moment noting that it looks like what Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2006 Oscars.
There's a light knock on my door which I assume is Mariana informing me the hair and make-up team is ready so I quickly make my way downstairs.
They braid small pieces of my hair and add golden hair accessories to match my jewelry. My eye makeup is the same green color as my dress paired with natural color lip gloss. I put on the matching green coat and scarf and walk outside where I'm greeted by a large Cadillac escalade. My dad hops out and greets me with a hug, "it's the big day" he says nervously. "Hey mo- Madame president" I correct myself as I get in.
"Oh stop it," she says laughing, "does everyone know the plan?"
"Behave, don't bring up my politi-"
"No Y/N, not that. I mean the activities after the inauguration"
"Don't worry darling" my dad says putting a hand on her knee "It's going to be great."
The rest of the car ride to the Capitol was very silent, when we arrived several tall men in black suits and sunglasses escorted us to our seats. I see Sydney sitting across from us with her dad.
"Wheres your mom?" I mouth.
"Looking over her speech, you know how she is."
I nod. Miss Harris had always been a perfectionist it wasn't a surprise she was altering her speech last minute. She was soon to become vice president, a moment she had talked about all the time since my mother asked her late into the debates.
The ceremony went by rather quickly, I spaced out during my mother's speech and only heard her end it by saying, "May God bless America, and may God protect our troops. Thank you America!"
My mom and dad did the traditional walk to the white house, Sydney and I rode in a car taking a longer route to the secret entrance.
We spent lots of time together because of our mother's campaign, turned out we had a lot more in common than we thought. We bonded over our love of music and movies.
"Have you seen all the senators?" she asks breaking the silence
" Hot-ties" I say looking over at her giggling.
"Oh my god, Senator Romanoff from New York?" she holds a hand up to make sure I know who she's talking about. I nod. "She could beat the dog shit outta me and I'd still mess with her"
"She'll be there tonight, won't she?"
"Yeah, but before I make a move google if she's into women" she jokes.
The man in the black suit on the passenger's side turns to look at us, "well actually she-", the driver interrupts him by hitting him on the arm.
"No no, let him finish," Sydney says leaning over.
"You didn't hear it from me but multiple women come out of her office messier than they came in, they come out adjusting their shirts and smeared lipstick all over their face," he says
"Dude," the driver says shaking his head.
"Remind me not to have this guy around," Sydney remarked
"Oh my god, she's a whore" I say jokingly almost at the same time.
We get out of the car and do the usual greeting we've been trained to do at these parties
'Hi, how are you? How are the kids? the economy blah blah blah...'
I spot Senator Romanoff at the bar, her curved figure hugged in a Black dress and her hair in perfect red curls sitting on her shoulders. She smiles and lifts her champagne glass to me.
"Y/N!" My mother calls interrupting our eye contact, "Y/N, I need you to do me a favor, I spilled something on my dress, and Senator Johnson here" I look over at him and he waves, "His wife has a tide pen. I think she went out back to the gardens, can you get that for me? please" I nod in agreement without saying a word.
My social battery was running out so I took a detour to the bathroom and admired myself in the mirror for a while before beginning my search for Miss Johnson. I take a deep breath and open the door to the brightly lit halls. As I walk to the gardens I pick up on another set of footsteps trailing behind me, I turn quickly and they try to hide behind a wall.
"I saw you already" I open my arms.
"Sorry, Miss Phoenix...Uh, the president asked me to follow you" said the same Secret Service member that was in the passenger seat of the car.
"Come on" I hurry him, not wanting to waste any more time.
We didn't even make it three steps before we were stopped by the sound of an opening door.
A lady in a caterer's uniform walks out adjusting her skirt, she gives us a quick smile and awkwardly walks away. The Secret Service guy and I look at each other with furrowed brows.
As we were about to resume walking the door opens again, my eyes widen at the sight of Senator Romanoff, she was more put together than the other lady. She smiles at us and walks off confidently.
"I told you! I TOLD YOUUU! Me. Chris told. Ah youuuu" he quietly screams when we were far enough.
I smile and roll my eyes "Shh, Okay Chris," I say finally learning his name.
Out in the garden, there is no sign of Mrs. Johnson. I go back inside to tell my mother but she'd already changed into a new dress.
As guests begin to disappear Sydney sits on my lap wrapping her arms around my neck and kisses me on the forehead. "Did I mention you look amazing? Because you do" she kisses me again on the cheek, this time I can smell the alcohol in her breath, she flops onto the couch next to me. My dad sits next to me on the other side "Yeah I could tell she was going to end the night like that" he says looking at her.
"Y/N Phoenix," he sighs "This is our home now" he puts his arm out and slaps it back on the couch softly.
